Councillor Update Success! It is nice to be able to report to you that
funding has been secured by your councillors from the planning contribution fund of £17,353 to be spent on Broadstone’s open amenities areas. Also £22,917 had been secured to spend on equipped children’s play areas. This money is for use at Broadstone and Springdale Recreation grounds – the planning contribution fund rules only allow money to be allocated for improving existing facilities for ‘casual play to enhance the green environment’ and ‘sustain Poole as a great place to work, learn and do business’ and particularly, ‘to improve the quality of open space for people and wildlife.’ It fi ts very well with the pledges we made at the election to look after open spaces and keep Broadstone green.
The purpose of the council run project is to ‘enhance open space in Broadstone with a focus on children’s play’. Currently, the council’s budget is under considerable pressure, so we are lucky to have secured funding for these improvements. In order to get the maximum improvement value for money, councillors have consulted and listened to residents – with the preferred option of focusing on replacing play equipment that is near the end of its useful life or to relocate equipment such as roundabouts and swings where they can be better used. Residents had reported to me that the play area at Springdale has often been fl ooded. Work has already been done to drain the area and a footpath location improved.
The relocation of equipment is now the priority – it may even have been completed as you read this. Also suggested was reworking of the safety fl ooring to reduce maintenance costs; replacing the heavy gates with lighter materials to reduce the chance of accidents; and increasing the seating provision. Tree works to manage shrubs on the boundary of some residents’ properties have been done to reduce the opportunity for ‘dens’ that could be used for concealed, illegal drinking and other anti-social pursuits. We will continue to monitor this with your Safer Neighbourhood Team and with residents’ concerns in mind.
There are also considerable improvements to get on with at Broadstone Recreation Ground.
Please continue to let me know how we can help by phone, letter or email, or meet me at the next councillor surgery in Broadstone Library, from 10am-12pm on Saturday 14th October.
