Farm Dogs ...Why we Love Them!
By Teri Davidson.
There’s no place better to live with a dog (or several), than on a farm. Most farmhouses are older and offer great mudrooms, big kitchens and lots of elbow rooms for our four legged friends to find their own space in our indoor living space. And then when it comes to the outdoor space...yipee lots of running , chasing and romping room! Dogs are good for the soul. They are like young children in their exuberance and joy in liv- ing. They have a way of helping us appreciate our surroundings and the beauty of mother nature. Running full tilt after that speed- ing rabbit, tongue out , fully enjoying the chase. Jumping at butterflies, investigating every sound under the tall grass. Bring- ing that ball or stick back time and time again. Never giving up on us enjoying the game as much as they are.
They also keep us safe. Prowlers do not go unannounced and once they understand and know you have a dog or two they don’t come around.. Strangers are watched with a careful eye. I have never been afraid on my farm with my dogs around me. I can go out on the darkest of nights , with my dogs by my side I am confident and secure walk-

ing back and forth to the barn. Children are watched over in a different , caring way...with the dog following them, guiding them, alarming us if something is amiss. Dogs love children. My dogs stay with my grandson, looking back over their shoulder as if to say “ is this okay?” once my grandson was lost in the tall corn. He’d ventured out further than he should have when we went on our walk and even though I’d warned him it could happen he became confused about how to get back to me. I heard him calling... I called back for him to follow our shepherd as I called her to me and out he came trough the corn stalks to me 10 minutes later right behind the dog.
Farm dogs are part of farm life and we are always sad to lose a cherished member of the fami- ly.
This is written in memory of my
girl..Maggie. I lost Mag- gie on Sept. 15th at just five years of age to cancer, but her spirit, her intelligence and her regal presence will always grace my heart.
