20/ DECEMBER 2012 THE RIDER Mind at Ease Equine Services offers more than just horse sitting

Mind at Ease Equine Ser- vices, located in Fort Erie, was started by life long horse lover Jessica Pattison. It offers farm sitting services in the Niagara Region. Do you want to go away on a worry- free vacation knowing your home and animals are left in

knowledgeable, compassion- ate, reliable hands? Mind at Ease Equine Services is there to help you. Jessica special- izes in equine care but is also available for dogs, cats, other household pets, cows, pigs, goats, rabbits, feathered friends and many more!

Mind at Ease offers two options of care: Live-In, and Commute.

Live-In offers daily ani- mal care with the caregiver remaining on the property overnight in the home. This is a popular option because it serves as a deterrent to

“unwanted visitors”. It includes having your mail and newspapers brought in, garbage taken out, lights turned on and off, blinds opened and closed and care for plants.

The Commute option offers daily animal care with the caregiver commuting the required distance daily. It includes mail and newspapers

being brought in, garbage taken out, lights turned on and off, blinds opened and closed and care for plants. The main difference is that the caregiver will not remain on the property overnight. There is a fee per kilometre for commuting.

Daily animal care is available when barn owners need coverage for a day/week

etc. but may not be out of town. “I just come in, do the work and leave”, says Jes- sica. “I am not responsible for “watching” the farm”. She is also available for exercis- ing, grooming, and tacking up for lessons during daily care or farm sitting. Jessica came from a strong, hard work- ing family that has always been supportive of her dreams. She spent the first few years of her life on a small hobby farm in Port Robinson, Ontario. “Although I was very young, I remember caring for the animals with my parents and my neighbours,” said Jessica. “I grew up with dogs, cats, chick- ens, ducks, cows, pigs, rabbits and geese”. When she was three she remembers her Dad bringing the neighbours ponies over for the day. She wanted so badly to ride them, but being ponies, it took him the bet- ter part of the day to catch one! She did eventually get to sit in the saddle and at that point she says “I am sure my parents said to themselves, ‘oh no, here we go!’” Jessica embraced everything horsey, reading every horse book she could get her hands on, and watching and learning as

much as she could. “I would sit in my room for hours and create the “ultimate” horse facility for my toy horses”. Eventually her parents got her involved in lessons. Through volunteer work and weekend jobs she learned everything from live-cover breeding to delivering a foal and all the barn management tasks in between. She helped start young horses, exercise older horses and handle foals. “I bought my beautiful AQHA mare at this point. I was 13 years old,” she said.

“Midnight and I have had many ups and downs. She taught me how to recog- nize and treat many ailments from thrush, to lameness, to colic and back pain”. Three years ago Jessica became involved with Natural Horsemanship and hasn’t looked back. She recently started training under Dianna Giliforte of Starting Small Riding Academy.

Having discovered a need in the indus- try for horse for coverage while owners are on vacation or otherwise away from their farms, Jessica created Mind At Ease Equine Services and began her business this past August. “I am focused on building lasting relationships with my clients. I understand that trusting someone to care for a home and animals is very difficult”. She hopes that her first consultation helps each client feel that their personal property, information and, of course, their beloved animals are left in caring, professional and capable hands. “I pride myself in top-notch care, superior reliability, and paramount client-care”. She is big on feedback and wants her clients and others in the industry to help her build her business to suit every- one’s individual needs.
