OnTRA Member Centres Take Part in Para-Equestrian Video Competitions
Member centres across the province are tak- ing part in the Para-Eques- trian Canada Competitions and the riders are having a blast!! Para-Equestrian Canada’s introductory sport programs have been developed specifically for therapeutic centres, so that riders may experience competition in a familiar and supportive environ- ment. Allowing riders to compete with other riders across the country is not only fun, but is also an important part of rider development and provides
riders with a sense of empowerment and accom- plishment.
Video competitions provide riders of all levels and abilities with the opportunity to experience competition in the comfort of their home stable and on a familiar horse. The riders are judged against other similar level riders across Canada and are eligible to place and win great prizes. Riders do not need to be classified in order to com- pete, and the classes are open to riders with both physical and intellectual
disabilities. Video compe- titions encourage riders to develop effective riding skills and provide riders with the opportunity to compete in a progressive and structured environ- ment. These competitions are a great way to ensure that all riders across Cana- da, no matter how isolated, have the chance to com- pete.
To participate, riders simply have themselves recorded while performing a specific test and upload it to the secure Equine Cana- da server, along with an

online registration form and the appropriate entry fees. The results of each competition are posted on the Para-Equestrian Canada website at:
www.equinecanada.ca/para -equestrian. Prizes are awarded to competitors who finish in the top three places in their class and each competitor will receive a copy of the judge’s scores and com- ments for their test.
Para-Equestrian Canada offers two types of classes in the video compe- titions: “Coast-to-Coast” classes and “Sea-to-Sea” classes. The Coast-to-Coast classes provide riders with an opportunity to compete in a variety of disciplines, and include a leading pat- tern, equitation, and obsta- cle course. Additional classes for cross poles, reining and driving are
available upon request. The Coast-to-Coast classes are $7 per class if submitted online and $10 per class for entries submitted by mail. Quotes on the Para-Equestrian Video Competitions
As a judge of the Coast-to-Coast competitions I try to provide feedback to each rider that is positive and constructive so that each rider has a goal for the next competition”-Victoria Andrew, Video Competition Judge, Therapeu- tic Riding Association of Ottawa-Carleton (TROtt)
I enjoyed riding in the Para-Equine video competitions! I loved the challenge and the comments that helped me to improve my rid- ing and to meet higher expectations of myself. It was an affordable opportunity to compete against other riders.
Sidesaddle at the Royal 2012
The Sidesaddle Connection was pleased to present 2 sidesaddle clinics at the Spirit of the Horse Ring during the Royal Winter Fair 2012.
It has been a few years since the elegant art of sidesaddle riding has been presented to the diverse audi- ence at the Royal.
Clinician Debbie Smith, of the Sidesaddle Connec- tion, started by explaining how a rider would start sidesaddle riding by choosing the correct sidesaddle for horse and rider. She then moved thru a brief history of the sidesaddle, showing how the sidesaddle differs in structure to an astride saddle. Myscha Burton and her horse Criolle Blues performed on the rail dressed in modern English attire as Debbie went thru proper saddle fit, leg position and “purchase” on a sidesaddle. Debbie also explained the habit worn while riding aside, demys- tifying how the habit apron is worn both on and off the saddle.
She finished up by fielding questions from an enthusiastic audience. Debbie was also given the opportunity to present two sidesaddle fitting seminars in the OEF Educational ring also in the Spirit of the Horse area.
The Sidesaddle Connection would like to thank the OEF and The Spirit of the Horse Ring for their help in the presentations.
