Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week (GBFW) 2013, celebrating its 47th year, will run from Thursday, January 3rd to Wednesday, January 9th, starting with Dairy Day, and ending on Crops Day. It is a 7 day Agricultural Confer- ence packed with a most impressive and informative line-up of speakers! It is held at the Elmwood Community Centre in Elmwood (# 38 Queen St. West). Elmwood is located approximately 8 kilometers north of Hanover on County Road # 10. The co-ordinators for this event, Grey County Ag Services, in con- junction with agricultural commodity leaders from Grey and Bruce Counties, have attempt- ed to feature at least one high profile speaker for each day, targeting the issues and chal- lenges facing the farming community today. One of the most exciting days each year is Horse Day – Sunday January 6, 2013. It runs from 9:45 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. It features a full adult program, and an exciting, interac- tive youth program. Where else, in one venue, can you experience presentations from: an Equine Stuntman; an Olympian; a Nutritionist; a Veterinarian; a Trail Riding Enthusiast; and Insurance Professionals; plus visit a packed tradeshow? This year the adult program will include:
• Shawn Orr, President of Wild Horse Pro- ductions Inc., A Bar K Rodeo Productions, and Flat Out Film Horses Inc. will share, Broncs, Bulls, And Life As A Stuntman. Shawn has been a stunt man for some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. He will discuss his very unique career that has been shaped by horses, cattle and elite compe- tition.
• Corlena Patterson, from Ration Experts— Equine Nutrition Consulting will be coming to delve into Your Horse’s Hindgut Health. Corlena makes nutrition topics fun, and understandable! She will illustrate that the proper function of the horses’ cecum is inte- gral to your horses’ overall health. She will explore how the cecum works, what it is meant to do, and what can happen when the cecum fails to work properly. She will also discuss what steps you can take to help the cecum work properly, and in turn, keep your horse healthy.

• David Wilding Davies, an Olympian from the 1988 Seoul Olympics Three Day Eventing team will speak on Eventing, and the Event Horse. He will be talking about what event- ing is, and how to select and train horses for the sport. He has a great deal of information to share, based on his years of experience in this discipline, at a very high caliber. He was a member of the Canadian Equestrian team from 1986 to 1990. He was rated 20th in the world in 1989, and 16th in 1990. • Jim Zyta, and Janet Schmidt, from North Waterloo Farmers Mutual Insurance Compa- ny will reflect on Horse Hazards-How To Avoid Injury, Loss & Lawsuits. They will review safety and liability risks every horse owner should be aware of, including preven- tion and protection tips from farm insurance specialists.
• Anne Holmes, a Veterinarian from CFIA will review, Infectious Diseases and Biosecu- rity. She will discuss how to protect yourself and your horse from infectious diseases and parasites. Anne will highlight how to ensure the health of your horse through: effective use of vaccinations; pest control; controlling movement of people on and off the property; and proper isolation of new horses. • Randy Wright from Chesley Saddle Club & Tom Thompson Trail group will discuss, Trail Riding And Horse Camping. He will discuss how to camp with your horse in and around Southern Ontario. He will also touch on safety, and equipment needed.
Meanwhile, in the basement, the kids are going to have a blast! They are going to start out with a mixer. Next, GBFW is delighted to have another pair of Youth Champions. Elizabeth Brown will discuss, How I Used “Cross-Training” Methods to Help Me in Hunter Competition; then Jessica Jensen will share How Horses Changed My Life. After lunch, the youth will move onto Horsey Crafts. As a result of very generous donations by Cancord Inc., and Aaron Martin Harness Ltd., the youth will be making lead ropes. With those lead ropes they will be learning interactively about Leading Tips; Knots You Should Know; and Rolling Lead Ropes. Then they will complete another Horsey Craft—Horsey Head Bands. These
