People Make A Difference award
The ORHA is pleased to recognise John and Sharon Fletcher as recipients of the 2012 O.E.F. People Make A Difference Award. The Fletchers have been active in the reining industry for many years, putting on shows, hosting clinics and bringing in new reiners to our discipline. In addition, the Ontario Reining Horse Youth Associa- tion has always depended on the support of the Fletchers - the Fletchers encourage our young riders at every opportunity. And of course, the Fletchers are well known in reining circles for the accomplish- ments of their horses and riders. In 2011, John and Sharon Fletcher’s horses garnered NINE ORHA year-end Champion titles and FIVE Reserve Champions, and their trainer, Loris Epis, earned Limited Open Reserve
Champion at the 2011 All American Quarter Horse Congress, and also made Congress Top Ten in the Open on another Fletcher horse, which was followed by Loris winning Reserve Champion Level I and Level II at the Oklahoma Futurity.
This year, Loris has also placed well, earning Reserve Champion in the Level 3 Open at the N.R.H.A. Derby in Oklahoma, and their other trainer, Heather Vaughn, was Novice Horse Open CHAMPION at the 2012 All American Quarter Horse Congress, with both of them also placing well in other Congress classes.
John and Sharon Fletcher are great ambassadors for Western Reining and are worthy candidates for the People Make a Difference Award.
Brian Heaton Memorial Award
At the year-end awards banquet in November, last year’s recipient of the presti- gious Brian Heaton Memorial Award, John Purdie, was delighted to recognise this year’s recipient, Mike Munroe, who is a per- sonal friend and fellow ORHA Board mem- ber. Mike has been on the ORHA Board for
many years, and he works tirelessly behind the scenes for the betterment of the Associa- tion and its members, most notably as the driving force behind organising and running the Grand Finale each year. A tip of the hat to you Mike!

A Rider’s Moving Legacy Honoured - Nominations being accepted for the Kaylynn Malmberg Young/Junior Riders Reining Award
Ottawa, Ontario-In memory of a very special young rider, the Canadian Reining Committee has established the Kaylynn Malmberg Young/Junior Riders Reining Award. The award will be presented to a young member of the reining community that most exemplifies Kaylynn’s love of horses, willpower, bravery and inspiration. The award will be presented to the person who shows courage and determination to overcome the most difficult of obstacles and distress to accomplish their equestrian dream, who unselfishly provides support by helping wherever required, cheers and encourages for that something extra, inspires by example even at the most difficult time, exhibits a positive attitude, puts that extra effort into the activity and goes above and beyond what is required for self and others regardless of any personal situation. “Kaylynn was an exceptional young lady, and we are happy to honor her memory and what she stood for by launching this award and handing it to a well deserving young Canadian reiner,” says J.P. Forget, coach of the Canadian Reining Team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games and an Equine Canada High Performance reining coach.
In 2010 following chemotherapy for brain cancer, Kaylynn left an Alberta hospital and flew to Lexing- ton, Kentucky to compete with her team in the North American Junior and Young Riders Championships in reining. During the week-long competition she became a celebrity, not only because she was a member of the gold medal winning Alberta team, but also because of her incredible ability to perform despite her grave ill- ness.
“I knew Kaylynn for a very short time, but her strength, courage and determination were an inspiration to everyone,” adds Wendy Dyer, chef d’équipe of the 2010 Alberta reining team at the championships. “It is only right an award be presented in her honour.”
The deadline for nominations is 4:00 p.m. EST, January 2, 2013. The winner will be announced at the Equine Canada Awards Gala, February 8, 2013.
