Congress

The 46th All American Quarter Horse Congress was once again the place to be in October. Congratulations to OQHA Queen Tausha Hellyer on placing 2nd in the Oral Interview & Queen Horse- manship and 7th in the written test and to all our Ontario and Canadian exhibitors and their many accomplishments at this prestigious event! Sunday, October 21 was an especially proud and exciting day for me as Youth Advisor as our OQHA Youth Team competed as one of 79 teams in the Congress National Youth Activities Team Tournament. Team members Stephanie Willsey placed 7th in Hunter Under Saddle and 4th in the NSBA entries and Heidi Nel- son placed 13th in Reining. Congratulations and thank you to all the team members for their excellent showing and to their families for making this a memorable and successful Congress!

Leveling Program

Before you know it, Jan- uary 1, 2013, is going to be here. That’s also the official implementation date for the new AQHA leveling program. The leveling program will include more and different levels, including new Rookie and Intermediate/Progressive showing levels and more and different awards. Leveling involves these new levels: • Rookie (based on the exhibitor and horse’s experi- ence/points combined and designed to be the true entry into AQHA competition) • Novice (based on the exhibitor’s experience) • Green (based on the horse’s experience)

• Intermediate (based on the exhibitor’s experience) • Progressive (based on the horse’s experience) • Open

The Intermediate and Progressive levels are based just on the rider or just on the horse. The Intermediate level will be tabulated on exhibitor points, while the Progressive level will be based on a horse’s points. And the Inter- mediate and Progressive points will count toward AQHA world championship show qualification, year-end high-point awards and the AQHA Incentive Fund. To learn more about how the new AQHA leveling pro- gram will work, download AQHA Executive Director of Show Patti Carter-Pratt’s lev- eling presentation and watch

Full Circle

Many owners are con- cerned about the long-term care of horses they’ve bred and/or owned, even long after they’ve been sold. AQHA’s Full Circle program connects a current owner with an unwant- ed or soon to be retired horse with his past owners. Then the current and past owner can work together to determine the long term care of the horse. Full Circle is a FREE service to all AQHA members and the best way to look out for your horse’s future. Enroll today and to take care of your horse for the many rides ahead.

Genetic Testing

AQHA is now offering a five-panel genetic test for HYPP, PSSM, MH, GBED and HERDA. Genetic diseases cause emotional and financial pain for horse owners and breeders. To help breeders make informed decisions, AQHA now offers a panel test for five genetic diseases – glycogen branching enzyme deficiency, heredity equine regional dermal asthenia,

hyperkalemic periodic paraly- sis, malignant hyperthermia and polysaccharide storage myopathy. When the test is ordered, AQHA will send a DNA kit, and the owner will mail it to the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the University of California-Davis for testing. Once the tests are complete, AQHA will notify the owners and put the results on the horse’s record and cer- tificate of registration. The tests cost $85 for members and $125 for nonmembers. For the panel test in conjunc- tion with the DNA test required for most breeding stock, the cost is $105 for members. The effects of these diseases are wide-ranging, from mild and manageable to severe and terminal. Passing these diseases on to successive generations often causes

unnecessary suffering and also leads to financial losses for breeders. To order your test, call AQHA at (806) 376-4811. Rule-Change Form

With the end of the year approaching, please keep in mind that changes to AQHA’s rules need to be submitted prior to December 31 in order to be placed on standing-com- mittee agendas for review at next year’s convention. To ensure sufficient information is provided, use the rule- change proposal forms on AQHA’s web site. The 2013 AQHA Convention is March 8-11 at the Hyatt Regency in Houston, Texas.
