28/ DECEMBER 2012 THE RIDER

The Hoofbeat Outriders Riding, Drilling, Vaulting, Roping, Gaming - Fun Loving Team

by Kelly Bowers

The Hoofbeat Outriders are an enthusiastic western style drill team who expresses their passion and entertains with challenging drill pat- terns, vaulting, roping, western gam- ing, and performing other skills on the horses they love. There is a flurry of activity and excitement during the performance, performed to fun popu- lar and country music, so the pure joy and fun is palpable and extreme- ly contagious for anyone watching. Besides the love of horses and having fun, the success of the team can be credited to the bond between the team members and the dedication and hard work of every rider and ground crew member on the team.

Based in Glen Huron, they have performed at The Royal Winter Fair and RCMP events as opening enter- tainment, racetracks, International Plowing Match plus many other Ontario fairs over the past five years. When asked how this year was for the team, founder, Tina Hurd replied, “We had a very exciting 2012 perfor- mance season, performing for crowds at the Dodge Ram Rodeo Rodeomania and various fairs in southern Ontario. Now, the Santa Claus Parade season is upon us and what a wonderful way to finish a stellar year!”

For 2013, the girls are looking forward to being at many of the same venues as this year, plus more dates as well. If you are looking for an

exciting and unique attraction for your next horse show, event or fund- raiser, contact the Hoof Beat Outrid- ers. They are always interested in appearing at new venues and letting their audience share in their fun! Potential new team members are welcome to come try out and join. Drill horses can be purchased or sup- plied by Knox Equine Services if you don’t have a horse, www,knoxe- quine.com. They are already sched- uled to appear at six events in the coming year.

Since they limit the number of performances they do each month, it’s wise to call early to ensure your date can be booked before the show season schedule is full. www.hoof- beatoutriders.com, 705-896-6521

Our First Dance is a 3-year old, 14.1hh grey gelding by the Welsh Sec- tion B stallion, Otteridge Foxtrot, out of the Morgan mare, SKF Wild Desire. “Derby”, as Our First Dance is affectionately known, is a registered First Premium North American Sport Pony. No stranger to Championship honours “Derby” in 2011 was Junior Champion at the 1st Northumberland Pony Show and then in 2012 took Grand Championship

Breeder Shannon McGill tells us “Derby has been a joy to raise and own. We have had a lot of fun and I’m thrilled with the pony he’s maturing into. He has an amazing show presence and loves to show himself off. You just can’t help but fall in love with him. Our 2012 show season has been a definite highlight reel, starting in June with the NPS where he won his age division and was then awarded the Grand Champion ribbon! Derby then completed his

year showing at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, where he again won his age division and was named Grand Champion in the Sport Pony Starsearch.” “I am pleased to announce that Derby has recently been sold to Garet Selleck, who plans to take Derby on to the next chap- ter in his career, under sad- dle. The reports so far are fabulous and I look for- ward to the accomplish- ments yet to come.” reports Shannon.

With Derby being registered with NASPR and owner Shannon, a 2012 member of NASPR,

This is the sec- ond year in a row that a gelding has won Supreme Sport Pony honours at the Royal and the sec- ond year in a row that a Pony Breeders of Ontario run show has supplied the Grand Champion Sport Pony. PBO founder, Diana Macdonald, adds “After only 3 years in exis- tence, we must be doing something right in our selection of judges when we are putting forth ponies that ultimately are selected to win the Grand Champi- onship.”
