SPONSORS OF CRISIS MANAGEMENT FEATURE

From a recent FOI request we discovered that 40% of Small or Medium-sized Enterprises (SME’s) suffering a `substantial` spill (undefined, but indicative of negative media attention and a requirement for attendance by the Environment Agency) will fold within 18 months of the incident.

Environment Agency costs usually exceed the physical level of the clean up costs by a factor of 8 to 1. Standard Liability insurance does not cover this. In April 2010 a UK water company was fined £15k for polluting a local river. However the true costs were: Tankering away the spilt chemical £32,600, Plugging the leak £8,300, fish surveys £26,000, Installing new equipment to detect a leak £60,000, Charge for EA officers attending £2,271, restocking the stretch of river £63,500. Including fines and prosecution costs the total incident cost £211,164 (source: Environment Times).

There are 2.5 million white vans on UK roads. If they carry more than 20 litres of fluids in the course of their business they are required BY LAW to carry an appropriate spill kit. Awareness of this fact is estimated at between 9 and 13%... puts recent PR announcements by the AA about 50% of UK Motorists travelling in France illegally with new French regulations into hi-viz and breathalysers into the shade!

WHY DO I NEED SPILL CONTROL TRAINING? Basic understanding of spill control & response is sound business sense - in the same way as locking doors, maintaining alarms or provision of fire extinguishers is sensible. 40% of SME’s involved in a serious or major spill incident fail within 18 months of the incident.

WHAT IS INVOLVED? Simple: `Basic Skills for Spills` course comes to you. Our unique Roadshow covers the length and breadth of the UK. A single 2-hour session at a local venue.
