SPONSORS OF COATINGS AND CORROSION FEATURE
INTERNATIONAL PAINT AND THE OFFSHORE INDUSTRY
International Paint has been involved in the offshore industry for over forty years, providing protective coating products and systems manufactured and tested to the highest standards. In addition, their highly experienced personnel are able to contribute coatings expertise across the project from front-end engineering through construction and installation to offshore maintenance programmes.
TRACK RECORD AND REAL TIME EXPERIENCE Due to escalating offshore maintenance costs and some notable coatings failures in the sector, wind farm developers and wind turbine manufacturers are beginning to look at more expensive solutions. Some of these are tried and tested – others are not. However in a time when the industry is trying to keep down costs it would be better to turn to people who have an extensive track record and knowledge of the industry.
At International they believe that they already have part of the solution and it is all about using the right coating in the right environment and knowing the outcome
The time factor involved with applying this kind of system is significant, with extended overcoating times required to get the best performance in corrosion protection. This product however, offers long-term protection with a single coat and, unlike epoxy coatings, will cure at sub- zero temperatures and can be applied at temperatures as high as 45ºC.
ADVANTAGES The product offers a number of advantages that make it appealing to the offshore renewables sector. For instance, once it has been applied, items can be moved within two and a half hours of coating, meaning fabricators need not wait so long to ship items.
DESIGN LIFE The company predicts a product design life well over 25 years, even in aggressive immersed seawater environments. Additional benefits include good UV resistance, as well as the advantages
of extended maintenance intervals and favourable lifecycle costs. “We’re using Zipcoat on a range of renewable technologies, from wave and tidal, to wind turbines.” Cole explained.
With the product having been transferred from applications with similar conditions, Zipcoat is able to offer reliability for the renewables market.
SCIENTIFIC TESTING Scientists have subjected the product to a range of tests, with it passing tests of its durability over 5,000 hours. Moreover, it has been tried and tested in a number of areas - for instance, the material was used as a departure from standard on the A13 Gateway bridge in 2001, and has been specified for immersed and non-immersed applications, including ships’ hulls, decking, superstructures and structural steelwork, being used in projects in Ukraine and Australia too.
INDUSTRY ESTABLISHMENT Now Corrocoat is aiming to establish Zipcoat in the renewable energy market too, with the company able to provide full anti-corrosion solutions, crucial to the offshore energy sector. “All our competitors are different, because we are the only ones to manufacture and apply coatings ourselves,” Cole remarked.
Moreover, with the offshore renewable energy sector still in relatively early stages of development, the company is looking to develop in parallel with renewables. “All the projects we are involved in are currently in development stage, and we are even helping out with some at the design stage – we’re looking to be central in this market.” Cole concluded.

without relying solely on standards and test such as Norsok and ISO 12944 – whilst useful these standards cannot compare with track record and real time experience.
WORKING WITH CUSTOMERS By working closely with offshore customers, investing in technical capabilities and having been involved in the offshore industry for over 40 years, they are able to understand the in-field performance of our products and make specification recommendations which can help to maximise the life of a coating system which could help to reduce the cost of energy over the design period.
Their growing number of recent offshore wind projects is complimented by a long list of track records from the offshore industry, including one project which has less than 1% corrosion over a period of 29 years in the North Sea.
GLOBAL PRESENCE They operate in over 50 countries worldwide, so our personnel are located to service key customers operating in the North Sea, including the UK, Benelux, Denmark and Germany.
