BEYOND CONDITION MONITORING STRUCTURAL HEALTH MANAGEMENT


The wind power sector has grown exponentially in recent years, bringing a sharp increase in the number and size of wind turbines (WT) and farms. Additionally, subsidiary cuts are being applied, whilst Operation & Maintenance (O&M) costs are continuously increasing, in part due to the number of WT coming out of their warranty or service contract.


Sales prices are under pressure while purchasing prices and service costs are soaring, the time is right to accelerate the introduction of innovative technologies for efficient monitoring, diagnosis and prognosis of critical components to reduce on- going operations costs.


THE CONDITION MONITORING NEED The solutions for evaluation of the structural condition of WT components (e.g., blades, nacelle, towers, foundation, etc.) are scarce, conversely to the condition monitoring of rotary elements. Critical Materials believe they have developed a solution, based upon finite element modelling of structural components, using real-world sensor and environmental data.


The company will discuss some of the technical decisions and operation of its product ‘PRODDIA W’ and how it believes the current approach to condition monitoring and structural health monitoring can use lessons learned from the aerospace industry to bring operations costs down in future editions.
