CASE STUDY EVIDENCE TWO YEARS SERVICE

UK specialist polymeric coatings development and applications company CAPPS® have now reached the second year of service of the new addition to their product range CAPPS® Vessgard EXT™, which has been developed as a long term protective solution for all marine and offshore external surfaces.

YEOMAN BRIDGE VESSEL The decks and hatch covers of the 96,000 tonne DWT self unloading bulk carrier vessel, “Yeoman Bridge”, with an area of 10,000 m2 were applied with the product in April 2010 and over the last two years the application has demonstrated vastly superior performance characteristics compared to conventional paint systems.

ONGOING DEVELOPMENT – CASE STUDY EVIDENCE In line with their ongoing development since their inception, the establishment of their advanced polymeric technology products is driven by case study evidence, and the two year mark is an important step in the markets which they are now promoting and developing Vessgard EXT™ into all industrial vessel type exteriors and offshore rig platform structures using conventional paint systems generally see service life of two years before the onset of failure and re - painting is required.

With all the CAPPS® technical advantages that the polymer encapsulation provides as well as the added long term aesthetic finish which is now clearly being proven, the Vessgard EXT™ system is proving with its case study evidence that it is has the potential to make the same level of impact on the market as the original Vessgard™ product for bulk carrier cargo holds, but to the much wider audience that the market for this product represents.

WIND ENERGY MARKET This product can be applied to any vessel type or offshore structure and they are now marketing this through their international network to not only bulk carriers but oil & chemical tankers, LNG carriers, FPSOs, associated offshore marine vessels and also the wind energy market.

Significant interest has been developing in Vessgard EXT™ since its introduction into the offshore industry, with the huge market of offshore rig platforms presenting itself as a potential new application area for CAPPS® and their international operation.

ADVANTAGES The obvious quality and longevity advantages compared to conventional paint systems is attracting this interest, but also in this market the speed of application is a huge attraction to rig owners who generally use multi - stage conventional

CORROSION PROTECTION PROTECTION OF OFFSHORE RENEWABLE ENERGY EQUIPMENT IS KEY TO A SITE’S LONG-TERM OPERATION

MONITORING AND PROTECTION One of the key issues that any offshore renewable energy project must consider is how the technology can be monitored or protected in its harsh environment of operation.

Remote component monitoring systems and rigorous testing all contribute to minimising downtime for offshore technology, but renewable developments can also borrow machinery protecting tactics from other offshore industries, such as oil and gas.

ZIPCOAT CORROSION PROTECTION Corrocoat, a company that specialises in anti-corrosion technology, is keen to apply knowledge of this, and other sectors where corrosion is an issue, to the growing renewable energy market.

Since the company began working in the renewables sector, it has been aiming to establish Zipcoat corrosion protection in the market, as Robert Cole, Sales Director of Corrocoat, explains; “I was looking at new markets for the company, and saw renewables as a new industry to tap into.”

“Zipcoat has been used for a long time in other industries, and we simply transferred the same knowledge and expertise to the renewables industry.”

PROTECTION Zipcoat is a single-coat, fast-cure product, that the company produced to replace the multi-coat systems that preceded it.

For many years, multi-coat systems (mainly epoxy-based) have been specified to protect capital equipment. These usually consist of three products: a primer for corrosion protection, an intermediate coat and a topcoat for UV protection.

Zipcoat is a multi-monomer unsaturated polyester coating containing micronised glass flakes, providing long-term protection in aggressive environments. The coating combines mechanical strength and robust performance with low solvent emissions, guaranteeing reduced environmental impact in line with developing legislation in this area.

epoxy systems for the painting of their platforms which involves considerable time and costs.

CAPPS® Vessgard EXT™ is a two stage rapid curing polymeric alternative which effectively provides a product many times more efficient than conventional paints and can be applied in less than half the time.
