SPONSORS OF CRISIS MANAGEMENT FEATURE

• Companionship support – encouraging opportunities for social outings and activities

• Emotional support – this may involve providing a listening ear and being approachable. However individuals should not be asked to go over events if they don’t wish to

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT If someone wants to talk about what has happened to a confidante outside their usual support network, then this should be offered. The important thing to remember is that any formal post incident support mechanisms should be offered on a purely voluntary basis. Practical, social and emotional support processes that promote good practice for recovery and trauma information may be useful for those who wish to access it. Contact with one’s GP is also encouraged.

An organisation’s occupational health provider should be able to assist with any welfare support, screening and follow-up processes. Preparation is key - traumatic incidents do not give advanced warning when they are going to happen and so organisations need to be aware of the potential impact of psychological trauma and be ready to assist those who may be affected.

Abermed is a market leader in the provision of occupational health services and is part of the International SOS group of companies. International SOS is the world’s leading international healthcare, medical assistance, medical and security assistance.
