SPOTLIGHT ON HARWICH


HARWICH NAVYARD


Navyard is a Competent Harbour Authority (CHA) in its own right – by an act of Parliament. The port is situated at the mouth of the river Stour, one and a quarter miles seaward (east) of Parkeston. There are over 4 hectares of land, with 3 berths and a total of 12,650 m3 undercover storage space.


A RICH HISTORY - PIONEERS It has a rich history. Originally a Naval Shipyard, back in the times of Samuel Pepys – then the local Member of Parliament and Chief Secretary to the Admiralty. The current layout was built in 1962 and operational as a purpose built Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) terminal for the owner Mann & Son (London) Ltd. and operated by the sister company – Harwich Dock Company Ltd. Trade was to Sweden and Finland, in addition only a year later Wallenius Lines was operating to North America from Harwich.


OFFSHORE WIND When the offshore wind farm activity started on the east coast some years back, Navyard had some enquiries, but each time contractors and sub-contractors were a little vague at explaining what they actually wanted from a port.


It was only when CT Offshore approached Harwich Dock with a view to base their subsea cable


operations for Gunfleet Sands offshore wind farm at Navyard a fuller understanding of what was really needed to facilitate this new construction industry.


After Gunfleet Sands came Greater Gabbard, and the huge size of this project meant the contractors started to again focus on the resources within Harwich Haven and Navyard.


GUNFLEET SANDS


The main contractor for GGOWF was Fluor, and they soon found that whilst being based at HIP for the construction and cabling they needed a local agent and a base for their Marine Coordination centre.

EXCITING TIMES


Mann & Son (London) Ltd. became very busy with all manner of ship’s agency work and on many occasions chartered AHT’s, PSV’s and coasters for Fluor and Seajacks, which demonstrates just how flexible and successful they are.


Having this arrangement, married into available berths and labour at Navyard gives an unequalled advantage. Having (in effect) one party controlling berths, labour and all the other factors is a big plus.

MANN & SON (LONDON) LTD Fluor appointed Mann & Son (London) Ltd. as agents, entered into agreement with Harwich Dock for the berthing of work boats and dive support vessel ‘Relume’. They soon became agents for MENAS (owners of ‘Relume’) and Seajacks.


SYNERGY


The synergy of using both Harwich Dock Company and the sister company Mann & Son (London) Ltd. as agents worked very well. Successful partnership’s being built


Furthermore this focal point fosters good understanding and relationships with all of its customers. The project team for Fluor were very good and communication was always excellent.


SIEMENS


Even as GGOWF project grew, Navyard was still keen to facilitate space for other contractors and OEM’s. Siemens Energy Service chose Navyard for their ‘Hercules’ retro fit project on Gunfleet Sands – which included an office and warehouse space.


Siemens STDL continue to operate out of Navyard, as does Fluor even though the project is drawing to a close. CT Offshore continues to keep options available as they remain working on the east coast.


NAVYARD – THE FUTURE Enquiries concerning the new projects (East Anglia Array and Galloper wind farm) continue. Navyard remains an outstanding option for now and the future.
