ALE PROVIDE SOLUTION FOR OFFSHORE WIND FARM, HARWICH

Global heavylift and transportation company ALE were contracted to complete the upending and load-out of jackets and other components for the Greater Gabbard Wind Farm project.

The project is one of the world’s largest offshore wind farms in construction, on completion the wind farm will have a total capacity of around 500MW, with all 142 turbines mounted on steel monopoles and transition pieces.

RESPONSIBILITIES

ALE’s responsibilities included creating a staging area to receive and store the offshore wind components, and redeliver them to installation vessels as and when required. The 35 jackets weighing between 450te and 823te were up-ended and loaded-out to barges for transportation to the wind farm field for installation.

CHALLENGES

The challenges associated with this type of project include matching equipment manufacture dates to the variable offshore installation schedule. The solution was to create a local staging area. ALE provided this ‘staging area’ for the Greater Gabbard project with great success, ensuring that equipment was received and stored ready to be loaded- out at any time, this meant the risk of delays due to variables such as weather conditions was minimised.

Tim Killen Commercial Director - UK at ALE said: “The offshore wind industry presents a unique set of challenges. With this particular project ALE minimised the risk of weather delays and decreased the issues associated with working at height by developing innovative solutions which reduce the dependency on cranes and increase the speed and reliability of operations. ALE is continually developing solutions to react to developments within the market, ensuring that we can offer the best results for our clients.”

EQUIPMENT SPECIFICATIONS ALE utilised the Terex Demag CC88000-1 crawler crane along with a Terex Demag TC2800-1 and CC2500-1 for the up- ending operations.

When the jacket was in a horizontal position the CC8800-1 picked up and transported the piece across the fabrication yard with full superlift attached and positioned the jacket onto the barge.
