SPOTLIGHT ON HARWICH
NEW ENERGY SKILLS CENTRE PLANNED FOR HARWICH
Colchester Institute, the largest vocational training provider in North Essex, is joining forces with Harwich International Port to create ‘The Energy Skills Centre at Harwich.’
The new Skills Centre will have an engineering focus and is set to be developed to meet the needs of the offshore wind energy industry of the emerging East Anglian Energy Coast.
FURTHER EDUCATION AND APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMMES This exciting project, set within the port estate, will provide a range of further education and apprenticeship programmes to assist business development and regeneration.
Set to open in the summer of 2012, the College will make a significant investment to refurbish and fit out premises with state of the art equipment within Hamilton House, Parkeston.
HARWICH INTERNATIONAL PORT
Strategically located in the thriving Harwich Haven, Harwich International Port has become the country’s leading facility for the installation of offshore wind turbines.
OPERATIONS AND ESTABLISHMENT Commencing operations in this sector initially with the Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm and now playing host to both the Greater Gabbard and London Array projects, as well as providing support to other developments, Harwich has now firmly established itself within this key market.
Within those projects supported to date, Harwich has played host to a wide range of jack-ups, cabling vessels, barges and accommodation vessels, as well as diving and support craft of numerous types, operated by many of the leading companies within the industry.
NATURAL PROTECTED HARBOUR Boasting one of the country’s finest naturally protected harbours, the Essex-based port has long been renowned for its fast lock-free access to the North Sea and beyond.

Danny Clough, Principal and Chief Executive said “Colchester Institute welcomes the opportunity to work with far sighted employers to develop such a vocational facility in Harwich. The College is particularly pleased to provide opportunities for students who wish to develop careers within engineering, at large, and energy creation, specifically.”
Councillor Kevin Bentley, Cabinet Member for Economic Development said “It is excellent news that the Energy Skills Centre is set to be developed in Harwich and we fully support it. Essex County Council recognises the far reaching opportunities offered by the energy sector now and in the coming years. To this end, we have already signed an Energy Skills Memorandum of Understanding with Suffolk and Norfolk County Councils to identify future opportunities for local business and residents.
With berths totalling over 1,100 metres, dedicated operational and storage areas in excess of 24 hectares (83 acres) are available immediately, with the possibility of further expansion for larger scale developments.
CONNECTIVITY
The port offers excellent connectivity, with quick access to the UK’s trunk road network, and with direct rail freight and rail passenger connections into the port.
Looking further afield, there are twice daily ferry services to Rotterdam and Hoek van Holland, with a three times weekly service to Esbjerg, whilst all four major London airports lie within two and a half hours drive.
With the East Anglian Energy Coast already being host to the world’s largest offshore wind market it is clear that there will be a need to upskill the local workforce to meet the needs of the offshore wind industry, and having an onsite training facility can only assist attracting major investment in this regard”.
