SPONSORS OF REGIONAL FOCUS
HEIGHTEC THE NATIONAL ACCESS AND RESCUE CENTRE
Based in Kendal, heightec was established in 1997. It is a growing employer within the Kendal area and, since the launch of its flagship training centre, has become one of the UK’s leading centres for work at height and rescue training.
NATIONAL NETWORK
The Company has established a national network of dedicated height safety centres and is the only UK Company that combines its wide range of training facilities with the manufacturer of technical fall protection and rescue equipment.
WIND ENERGY INDUSTRY FOCUS Over recent years, heightec has responded to the increase in the construction of wind turbine generators (WTGs) and is a RenewableUK approved and accredited training provider for working at height and rescue courses.
TRAINING SIMULATORS
It has constructed two training simulators, dedicated to the wind industry, to complement its existing training apparatus.
The simulators enable height safety and rescue training to take place in all areas of a turbine and include...
• Turbine shaft with ladder and fall arrest system
• Rear opening doors with jib arm • Several service and rescue hatches • Hub section with front and floor hatches • Realistic and varied anchor points • Roof access hatch • Roof rails and anemometer stalk
heightec climbing courses provide a full range of skills and knowledge to allow a person to work safely at height in wind turbines which include...
• Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) – an HSE-approved First Aid course for nominated EFAW individuals or businesses who must manage first aid requirements for work sites or offices; covering all the skills necessary, ranging from initial survey, administering first aid through to recording accidents in the workplace
• Work at height: Emergency first aid – a practical casualty handling and management course including EFAW and the use of automated external defibrillators
POWER CABLE INSTALLATION, MAINTENANCE AND RELATED ENGINEERING SERVICES WORLDWIDE
UNIQUE RECORD OF EXPERTISE
Global Marine Energy is the largest independent provider of subsea power cable installation, maintenance and related engineering services worldwide. The company has a unique record of expertise in wind farm projects dating back to Round 1.
The North West is a significant area for the renewable energy sector and key to the government’s plans to source 20 percent of energy from renewable sources. The shallow seabed in the Irish Sea and the area’s geography provide ideal conditions to install offshore wind farm projects, and the North West is making an important contribution to helping the government reach its ambitious targets for greener energy.

GWYNT Y MÔR WIND FARM Currently, Global Marine Energy is working on the installation of subsea cables for Gwynt y Môr, set to be Europe’s largest wind farm.
Constructed 13 kilometres off the North Wales coast, in water depths of 12 – 28 metres, Global Marine Energy is installing the export cables that will transport 576MW of power from the Gwynt y Môr wind

farm, via two offshore substations, to a transition pit behind the beach at Pensarn in North Wales. It is a shared investment between partners RWE Innogy, Stadtwerke München GmbH and Siemens.
Once fully operational, energy generation from Gwynt y Môr is expected to be equivalent to the average annual needs of around 400,000 homes.
INVESTMENT
Due to the increase in specialist demand for offshore power cable installation in the UK, Global Marine Energy invested in the refit and development of Cable Enterprise, a barge built specifically for the installation of power cables for offshore wind farms.
Global Marine Energy’s Chief Executive officer, Mark Leggett commented that “the UK has a huge opportunity in offshore wind power but its infrastructure needs vital investment in order to compete with other European countries such as Germany”.
