SKILLS GAP


WIND ENERGY INDUSTRY


Our regular readers will have seen the introduction to our initiative in the last edition which featured the work of Kent Council in engaging with young people to attract them into the wind energy industry.


The main point to get over in this important industry feature is that there are a number of initiatives happening throughout the UK but we have found that there is very little ‘joined up thinking’. We will therefore use our considerable resources to help get things moving without delay.


As planned we now feature the 4 target areas, which is the next stage in our progress with the ultimate goal of satisfying the now recognised future skills gap within the industry.


We have sent out an email to leaders in the industry, as well as government representatives and selected relevant others, describing in detail what we wish to do and have received an excellent response. We will have inevitably missed someone out so please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to get actively involved and we will send you more detailed information.


Our immediate aim is to find a nucleus of like minded, positive, self motivated, influential and exceptional individuals to move things forward quickly.


TARGET AREAS


All target areas will include information on industry apprenticeship schemes as there are no age barriers.


We will feature each of these areas more in detail in subsequent editions and will include relevant contributions from appropriate organisations, associations and companies.


• Young people/parent/teacher engagement


Primary and secondary schools up with a view to changing the perception of engineering generally and attract the desired workforce for the future


• 6th Form Schools/Further Education Colleges


16yrs and above to change perception and introduce relevant projects with the aim of attracting appropriate individuals into the industry


• University students/graduates with the aim of attracting the best academic people into the industry


• Other industries e.g. Oil, Gas and The Forces


Individuals who are experienced technicians with considerable transferable skills relevant to the wind energy industry


SKILLS GAP FINAL FEATURE


We will draw together what has been learned and set deliverable timescales and deadlines.


WIND ENERGY NETWORK ‘ROAD- SHOWS’


It is our intention to tour the UK and organise road-shows at appropriate venues suited to the 4 target areas i.e. selected schools, colleges, universities and company sites/forces bases. All decision makers from the relevant areas of the industry who have already been approached, are enthusiastic about getting involved with this initiative. Following further consultation with interested parties timescales and road- show formats can be discussed and decided.


INTERACTIVE WEBSITE We are currently working on a highly interactive and informative website which will form an essential role in attracting people of all ages and abilities into the wind energy industry.


To progress this project we are holding a meeting on Thursday 14th June at 10.30am in Excel, London (during Global Offshore Wind).
