MABEY BRIDGE AND HARWICH [ A CASE STUDY ] SPOTLIGHT ON HARWICH
Mabey Bridge is a household name in the bridge building business, but the South Wales-based manufacturer is fast becoming a major player in the UK renewables industry.
INVESTMENT The company has invested £38m of its own money in a state of the art onshore wind turbine tower facility and has recently expanded its product range to include tubular steelwork for both the offshore wind industry, and the port and harbour construction market.
HARWICH INTERNATIONAL PORT UPGRADE
Mabey Bridge has now delivered a dolphin pile that will be used to protect the upgraded second berth, as part of Harwich International Port’s redevelopment. With extra traffic anticipated for the Olympics the port is upgrading mooring facilities. The structure weighs 94 tonnes, is 43m long and is constructed out of 35mm thick x70mm, marine grade steel.

Herbosch Kiere and the design engineer is engineering and development consultancy Mott MacDonald. In April of this year Mabey Bridge sealed its first offshore renewables contract. The deal saw a 170-
tonne monopile and 60t topside designed and installed by Fugro Seacore and manufactured at Mabey Bridge’s new facilities.
The monopile has since been installed as the foundation for a met mast at EON’s, Round 3, Rampion Offshore Wind Farm, off the Sussex coast.
