LEADERSHIP


Leadership starts with the ability to draw people together and unite towards the achievement of a common goal –often called a “vision”. It’s about inspiring and instilling confidence in others to give maximum discretionary effort to deliver remarkable results. The psychology of leadership is a complex science but to me it’s all pretty simple stuff.


COMMUNICATE


If people are going to follow you, they need to see, feel and hear that you’re genuinely concerned about them as individuals: show by your actions that you value them and their contribution; invest time in coaching them; make it clear you have positive expectations of them.


INTEGRITY


People need to trust in you and that’s where your integrity is key: act with honesty and consistency that reflects the attitude of placing the good of the organisation before personal gain. Show humility with a willingness to modify your views after listening to others. It follows that you need to be accessible, approachable and flexible placing great importance on face-to-face communication, so that staff at all levels feel comfortable and able to liaise with you.


ENERGY AND PASSION


Communicating with energy and passion whilst embracing opportunity and taking controlled public risks will fire up your team.


DELEGATE


Inevitably, you’ll have to hand the baton over to others and trust them to take decisions/initiatives by delegating effectively, encouraging staff to develop their own skills as leaders.


CHOICES


As ever in life leadership will forever present you with choices. In a true performance driven organisation: choose conflict over harmony; choose accountability over popularity; choose results over status
