Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey Description: ESPA is a non-profit and a non-governmental organisation founded in 1995 in Brussels as an umbrella body for the many national spa associations across Europe. There are now 20 members, mostly national bodies. Its purpose is to promote spas and balneology in Europe and to ensure that natural remedies from water, soil and the climate are readily available to the European population. In 2006, ESPA introduced a EuropeSpa quality seal of approval and there are now spas with the accreditation in 12 countries. In 2011, ESPA assigned the international assessment company DEKRA Certification is to carry out future audits for and EuropeSpa. This year, ESPA will publish its EuropeSpa Med Certification for medical spas.

Its aim is to expand and enhance the image of the country’s spas and quality establishments. In 2010, SPA-A launched a Spa Quality Charter delivered by spa industry professionals. Minimum quality requirements concern hygiene, staff training and infrastructure.
