NEWS THE END OF AN ERA

The last Metric Accent parking ticket machine ever to be manufactured in the UK is operating in a car park in one of the most northerly towns in the UK.

The Highland Council has installed the Metric Accent in Somerled Square car park in the centre of Portree, the largest town on Skye and the biggest of the Inner Hebrides islands, with a population of 3,000.

It was one of two bought by Highland Council to supplement two existing Accents located in Somerled Square car park and another called The Green. The council purchased the previous Accents some seven years ago and as a result of their reliability they decided to

have two more, which happen to be the last to come off the production line at the Metric Group’s manufacturing plant in Swindon.

‘It’s nice to create a wee bit of

history,’ said Mark Crowe, the community works manager.

TOP AWARD FOR Q-PARK

The team at international car parking company Q-Park is celebrating after receiving a European Standards Parking Award (ESPA) for its refurbished Chinatown car park. The award was presented to Q-Park for meeting the high standards required to win this recognised achievement. The ESPA award is given to car parks which provide a superior level of quality across a range of different categories. The areas that are assessed include lighting, vehicle entry and exit, parking areas, pedestrian areas, lifts, stairwells and overall security. Throughout the judging process all aspects of the car park are observed and marked against strict assessment criteria. Everything from signage and kerb design to disabled access and staff presence are included in the assessment. Q-Park Chinatown adheres

to the standards set by the European Parking Association. Q-Park has recently

refurbished the Chinatown car park as part of a £10million refurbishment programme that is currently underway across its portfolio of Westminster car parks.

The car park has been fully upgraded, fitted with new barrier and payment equipment, CCTV and secure entry systems. The car park also boasts brighter lighting, newly-painted walls and floors and a glass-fronted Hosts lodge which is manned 24 hours a day. Q-Park managing director, Adam Bidder, said: ‘Chinatown is our first fully refurbished car park in London and we are extremely proud that is has achieved an ESPA award. Delivering a quality service and providing safe parking facilities is what Q-Park is all about.’

‘The previous two Accents provided us with a very reliable service and so we had no reason to consider the purchase of any other Metric model. ‘The additional Accents in the two 45-space car parks offer more capacity for people who

want mainly short stay parking within the village.’

Metric say the sale of their very last Accent is tinted with nostalgia though parts will still be available for the maintenance and repair of the Accent population over the next 10 years.
