The parking profession could learn a lot from the BPA’s Wales group, according to its chair Peter Lowe. Tim Gillett fi nds out more
majority of Wales is very rural and in many areas it is seen as quite acceptable for motorists to just pull up and park on the side of the road, either fully or partly on the pavement. ‘Of course, this does not present a problem in many rural areas, but causes problems in the larger population areas. In terms of trying to enforce rules, this can be problematic – you can have different rules for different places but you cannot then expect the motorist to be aware of the rules in every different location throughout Wales.

‘We would like to regulate the situation and introduce a blanket ban of pavement parking throughout Wales, but that would necessitate primary legislation so we are still in Westminster’s hands. It is possible for individual councils to apply to implement a ban by putting up signs, but we feel one rule for everyone would be a much better situation. ‘They have managed to ban all pavement parking in London, so we will keep pushing for it here and we are still hopeful that we can introduce it at some point.’
