aving a workforce with the right skills in place is now more important than ever. The recession has meant employers are looking to their staff to deliver operational effi ciencies and manage change like never before. At Asset Skills, we regularly talk to employers in parking about their skills issues, and we work closely with the British Parking Association to address skills shortages in the industry.

The most frequently cited skills gaps within the parking profession are reported to be around written and verbal communication, general IT, and knowledge of the parking sector – including legislation.
Attracting a younger workforce In order to improve these skills gaps, it’s important to attract new people. We know employers in our sector have diffi culty engaging with schools and further education institutions from where new recruits can be drawn. When young candidates are identifi ed, they often lack essential employability skills. The Youth Employment Challenge, a recent report by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES), indicates only one in four employers are recruiting young people, and calls for new ways of stimulating recruitment.
