Solid connections However, the Wales group has certain advantages – largely, that it enjoys closer connections to government in many ways. Meetings comprising as many as 50 members are held regularly all over Wales, with many of them being attended by members of the Welsh Assembly. Lowe explains: ‘A few years back we asked representatives from the Assembly to come to one of our meetings, and I have to say they have been extremely supportive from the outset. ‘I particular I’d like to single out Colin Eaketts, who is the Assembly’s head of integrated transport. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind me saying that he was rather inexperienced on transport matters when he first got involved, but he has certainly done his homework and now he’s completely up to speed on all things related to parking in Wales.
‘He has been a real asset to the parking profession here and we are delighted to

be working with him. For example, he came to a recent meeting and gave a very informative, impassioned talk that lasted a good 40 minutes or so. It’s great that he has devoted the time and energy to getting to know our profession and that he makes himself available for us to get over our points of view.’
The Blue Badge issue One example of how the BPA in Wales has been working closely with the Assembly is on the thorny matter of Blue Badge parking. Lowe explains: ‘It is something we have been working on for five years and a subject that we feel is very important to resolve. On the face of it the rules governing Blue Badge parking are the same across Wales, but the wording of these rules has always been open to interpretation to a certain extent and there are different rules within different local authorities regarding how long disabled drivers are allowed to park in Blue Badge spaces.
