SAFER PARKING SCHEME

A FIRST FOR BASINGSTOKE CAR PARKS

A REAL HOOT FOR NIGHTOWL TRUCKSTOP

Nightowl Truckstop South truck park has been granted the Park

Mark award.

Ian Carmichael, the Scheme’s BPA local area manager, said ‘We are delighted that the Nightowl Truckstop South truck park has reached the standards required by the scheme, as it demonstrates that Nightowl is committed to providing safer environments for those that use the facilities.’

In this case, both the police and the Safer

Parking Scheme worked with Nightowl to create 82 new truck parking spaces (in

addition to the pre-existing 240) in response to the ever-increasing demands from haulage companies for a safe and secure environment for their drivers and loads. The facility boasts up-to-date security cameras, fencing, a road blocker system and automatic number plate recognition. The truck park is open to cash parkers, account holders and those wishing to depot vehicles. For customers – in this case, truck drivers – using a Park Mark Safer Parking area means that the area has been vetted by the police and has measures in place in order to create a safe environment.

HIGH STANDARDS FOR BRIGHTON & HOVE

Brighton & Hove City Council has successfully retained its Safer Parking Park Mark awards for 12 months at both The Lanes car park and London Road car park. This was as a result of the recent re-assessments by Phillip Edwards (Sussex Police accredited assessor) and Mike Bibby (BPA area manager for the south east). Over the past 12 months, there have been no relevant incidents recorded at the London Road facility and only three at The Lanes car park. With annual vehicle throughputs of 178,000 and 408,000 respectively, both facilities create safe and non-threatening environments for

users. Management practices are of a very good standard, with monitored electronic surveillance and good lighting, while vehicle access is controlled with the use of shutters. Regular visits are made at both locations, together with a good standard of cleanliness, which reduces any fear or perception of crime.

Mike Bibby said: ‘Brighton & Hove City Council have once again maintained the required standards for the Park Mark awards to continue, and I would like to congratulate all personnel involved resulting in any problems being kept to the absolute minimum.’

All council-run public car parks in the centre of Basingstoke now have the Park Mark Safer Parking award for the first time. The news comes after a concerted campaign by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council over the last few years to bring its town centre car parks up to the scheme’s high safety standard. Councillor Elaine Still, cabinet member for communities, sport and culture, said: ‘It is fantastic that these council-owned car parks have been awarded the Park Mark award.

‘It is very reassuring for residents and visitors to the borough that our town centre car parks meet this standard, providing parking that’s well lit, clean and has good surveillance.’ BPA area manager for the Safer Parking Scheme for London and Hampshire, Graham Chapman said: ‘Congratulations to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council for ensuring that their residents and visitors to the town centre can park safely, and in the knowledge that these car parks have been successfully assessed regarding both their physical security and management practices – ensuring that they reach the quality Park Mark standard.’ June Allison, crime prevention design advisor and Park Mark assessor, said: ‘The county of Hampshire has got 100 Park Mark facilities, of which 16 are in Basingstoke. All praise to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council for pushing this forward.’ For more information on council-run car parks in Basingstoke and other areas of the borough, visit www.basingstoke.gov.uk/go/ carparks or call 01256 844844.
