CAPTURE THE MOMENT
Parking’s been in the spotlight thanks to a TV documentary, but – says BPA chief executive Patrick Troy – we need to harness the excellence behind the scenes
anuary’s Parking Mad documentary (BBC1, 8 Jan) reminded us all that in the public’s eye there is still more to do to persuade motorists of the importance of parking management. It also reminds us that parking is primarily about people, how they behave and how they react to certain situations. As with all television programmes of this nature, you never really see the excellent practice that does exist in many places around the country, but we do need to capture this excellence and spread it more liberally throughout our profession. I have always believed that the BPA has an important role to play in this, and that is why we are embarking on a project called ‘Frameworks of Excellence’.

A framework of excellence is an accreditation, a stamp of approval, a licence to practise, or a quality mark, which aims to raise standards across the parking profession. We know different frameworks will apply to each subsector within our profession, and that these can be voluntary or compulsory dependent upon how that subsector sees the pursuit of excellence. However, it is clear that, to gain recognition, we need to drive forward
this initiative to demonstrate to the wider public that we are wanting to put them at the heart of our thinking and to deliver excellence on their behalf.
