SDI creates the perfect out-of-store experience to get US-based Milwaukee out on the road to meet new customers!


When Milwaukee, a leading US manufacturer of power tools, wanted to reach out to its expanding European customer base, it decided the best strategy was to take its products directly to its customers. To bring the strategy to life and to create maximum impact, Milwaukee tasked UK‐ based POS experts, SDI, with transforming an articulated lorry into a mobile product showcase known as ‘The Big Red Truck’. Not only would this help Milwaukee standout from its competitors, it would also create an out‐of‐store experience designed to fit around the busy working life of the company’s tradesmen customers. With a turnaround time of less than eight weeks, SDI had to work quickly, drawing upon all the expertise in its in‐house design, manufacturing and installation teams. The result was a high impact, mobile merchandising system.


Designed to allow the tools to be fully accessible, handled and tested by customers when the vehicle was stationary, it also ensured that the products were fully secured when the truck was in transit. At the heart of the design were individual powder‐coated metal pods, illuminated with LEDs to create an eye‐catching industrial style display. Each pod was designed to slide into an onboard wooden

'bookcase' framework, allowing for quick installation as well as easy updating in the future.


Bespoke holders were created for each product and the pods were designed so that the tool holders could be easily removed or replaced to accommodate new product launches or expansion of the range. The mobile display was made up of over 250 individual elements including more than 100 individual bespoke tool holders, 32 tool pods, two television pods and 100 euro hooks. Not only was the fit‐out of the Big Red


Truck completed in less than eight weeks, but the entire display, including the merchandising units, was installed directly onto the truck and wired‐up in just 48 hours.


The truck has already visited a host of European countries, receiving an outstanding response from stockists, retailers and customers. Milwaukee has experienced a rise in sales, as well as creating greater customer interaction and increased knowledge of the brand and its products amongst key audiences.
