Retailers also need the services of many other local businesses ‐ accountants, lawyers, shop fitters, electricians, decorators, printers ‐ so they’re an integral part of the local economic eco‐system. Independent Retailer Month recognises that some of the UK’s most successful chains have been, and in many cases still are, independent retail businesses and they all started somewhere.
A1: Is there anything that people can do to help with the event this year? CR: If you want to help or get involved then the simplest thing is to spread the word and to make a commitment to try and shop with your local independents as much as possible. If you have services you can trade and are willing to do so then small contributions at a local level can really help boost the campaign. To ensure consumers know about what’s happening in the area, retailers should be contacting their FSB, Town centre management, local councils and local press, so that events and activities can be well publicised. It’s the little things that each of us can do that make a big difference when we work together.
It’s said that it takes about 6 weeks to form a habit – let’s see if through the 31 days in July we can begin to help consumers to rediscover their high street and encourage them to develop a shop‐local habit!
