On Wednesday, September 15, 2010, Loui S. Ling, longtime owner and restaurateur of the Shanghai Restaurant in Downtown Silver Spring, MD, passed away peacefully at the age of 102. Beginning in 1938, he operated Lee's Tea Garden in the Silver Spring Shopping Center and later opened the Shanghai Restau- rant in 1950, retiring in 2000 at age 93. She was born Dorothy May Sedlack on February 26, 1930 in Piermont, New York to Thomas F., Sr. and Helen (Hardy) Sedlack. She married Gerald F. Merna, her Tappan Zee High School classmate, in a military ceremony on February 10, 1951 at St. John's Catholic Church in Piermont.They were married over 59 years. Mrs. Merna was a former Bell Telephone long-distance operator in Nyack, NY, and a defense-related contractor in Piermont before she accompanied her husband on a variety of assignments during his 22-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps. In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by her daughter, Linda Merna Figura of Alexandria, VA; and her two sons, John Gerald Figura and Max Thomas Figura of Alexandria, VA, and their son, Gerald Thomas Merna of Sterling, VA with his wife, Diane (Babarsky), and their daughter, Domenique Gummow of Falmouth, MA; and two grandchildren, Asa and Cassidy. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thalia. With an early passion for flying, Leo became a pilot. He served 25 years in the U.S. Navy. He flew combat missions in WWII and the Korea conflict. He was highly decorated and received The Distinguished Flying Cross, Silver Star, Air Medal (seven stars), Navy Unit Commendation for the USS Cowpens and the USS Badoeng Strait (one star), Asiatic Pacific (nine stars), WWII Victory Medal, China Service Medal, National Defense Medal (one star), Korean Service Medal (three stars), United Nations Service Medal, Philippine Liberation (two stars) and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. After retirement, Leo spent many happy days flying sailplanes in Virginia, Colorado, California and New Mexico. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and relatives. She graduated from Upper Marlboro High School and worked at Andrews Air Base for 25 years. Mary remained a devoted daughter to her dear mother Mary. She and her brother Frederick cared lovingly for her until her death at age 95. Mary enjoyed summer trips to Rehoboth Beach attended by the entire family. Mary is remembered as a kind and loving aunt, a great cook, and a devout Catholic woman. She will be greatly missed and thought of often. She is survived by her twin sister, Kathryn Schroepfor; her niece, Susan Madden of Timonium, and many nieces and nephews. On Tuesday, September 14, 2010 of Arlington, VA. Mr. Stopher was born in Elwood, Indiana and spent his childhood in Anderson Indiana. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in Germany. After his military service, he worked as a Senior Budget Analyst for the Dept. of Defense at the Pentagon. During the 9-11 attack on the Pentagon, Mr. Stopher volunteered in the rescue mission. He coura- geously went back into the Pentagon to rescue others after he, himself escaped unharmed. A year later he was awarded a civilian medal by the U.S. Army for his outstanding bravery and honor. He earned a Master’s Degree in history from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Mr. Stopher is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Dotti Stopher. Colonel Warner’s early assignments as an armor officer were at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he met his devoted wife of 31 years, Bianca. From there, he served in assignments with the 1st Armored Division in Europe before returning to the United States in 1983 for the first of several assignments inWashington DC. The positions held include Military Aide to the Chairman of the 1985 Presidential Inaugural Committee for President Reagan’s second inaugural; Aide de Camp to the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Military District of Washington; and Joint Politico-Military Planner, NATO Policy Branch, J5 in the Pentagon. In 1988 he returned to Germany to serve with the Second Armored Division (Forward). As Executive Officer, he deployed with the 3rd Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment to Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1990. Returning from Southwest Asia in 1991, he was assigned to the Joint Staff at the Pentagon where he served as a personnel war planner and Aide de Camp to the Vice Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1994 he assumed command of 2nd Battalion, 8th Calvary Regiment, 1st Calvary Division at Fort Hood, Texas. Following battalion command, he served in several Army positions in international affairs culminating with his assignment as Director for the American, British, Canadian and Australian (ABCA) Armies’ Primary Standardization Office. COL Warner graduated from the US Army War College in 1998. In 2002, COL Warner became the Deputy Commander, US Army Center for Military History in Washington DC. In March 2003 he deployed to Iraq to be the Commander of the Military History Group (Provisional) to capture the historical record of military operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He accompanied elements of the 3rd Infantry Division on their historic march to Baghdad and for his actions he was awarded the Bronze Star. He retired in

On Saturday, September 18, 2010 of Silver Spring, Maryland, of cancer. Born on August 7, 1927 in New York City, he was a graduate of City College of New York and received a Master’s degree in Geology from the University of Kansas. After starting his career with the U.S. Army Map Service in Washington, D.C., he served 32 years with the Federal Power Commission (later the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission), as a geologist and an engineer. He retired as a Bureau Chief in the Bureau of Natural Gas in 1987. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Betty; children David (Sue) Wahrhaftig of Larch- mont, NY, RobertWahrhaftig of Newport Beach, CA, Steven (Veronica) Wahrhaftig of Potomac, MD and Susan Wahrhaftig of Columbia, MD. His five grandchildren who adored him, Rebecca, Laura, John, Christopher and Steven, also survive him. A private funeral service for the family will be held. He was born in Dayton, OH, on February 7, 1920, the son of the late John Mason and Elizabeth “Bessie”Wiley Prugh.
Dr. Prugh and his beloved wife, Winnie, (deceased in 1990), his partner in life and in ministry, developed two new Presbyterian churches. In 1944, they founded College Hill United Presbyterian Church in Dayton, OH, which they served until 1953. In 1959, they founded St. Andrews United Presbyterian Church (now known as Rockville United Church) in Rockville, MD, which they served until 1974. Dr. Prugh was the champion of many humanitarian causes and while in Rockville served as the first President of the Fair Housing Authority inWashington,D.C.

During his 30 year military career, Colonel Warner received the Legion of Merit Medal, Bronze Star Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (with four Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (with four Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), National Defense Service Medal (with Bronze Star), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal (with three Bronze Stars), Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Rib- bon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award), and the Southwest Asia (Saudi Arabia) and Kuwaiti (Emirate of Kuwait) Liberation Medals. He was also awarded the Honorable Order of Saint George (Bronze Medallion) along with the German Marks- manship Award (Bronze Schuetzenschur), the Bul- garian Medal of Freedom, and the Canadian Para- chutist Badge.
Don was an active member of the Heritage Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, Virginia. He participated in mission trips to Mexico to build homes for the poor and the Hypothermia Outreach to keep homeless people out of the cold. He had a love for singing which began with the Safari Singers, a high school musical group, and participation in the Texas All State Choir and continued through his lifelong participation in church choirs. Don’s sporting passions were golf and football. True to his Texas roots, he remained a lifelong Dallas Cowboy fan. He loved seeing the world and experiencing other cultures during his many international travels. Don’s personal hallmarks were his positive outlook on life, his quick witted sense of humor, and his ever friendly manner.
Colonel Warner was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and LeilaWarner. He is survived by his loving wife, Bianca (Browning) Warner; his brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Diana Warner of Austin, Texas; his father-in-law, Bryan Browning of Louisville, Kentucky; his mother-in-law, Bette Atkins of Jeffersonville, Indiana; and a host of cousins throughout the United States.
A Service to the Witness of The Resurrection will be held on September 25, 2010, at Heritage Presbyterian Church, 8503 Fort Hunt Road, Alexandria, Virginia, 22308.
