LOGLINE
What does it mean to go to the movies? Through an examination of the repertory and revival era in San
Francisco, STRAND: A Natural History of Cinema explores this question while uncovering the hidden history of
one of the richest moments in fi lmgoing.
BIO
Natalija Vekic is a San Francisco-based fi lmmaker. She was the recipient of the prestigious Princess Grace
Award for fi lm, and invited to participate in the 2003 Bay Area Now III show at Yerba Buena Center for the
Arts. Her initial work as a fi lmmaker centered on a trilogy of fairytales. Her fi lms have screened at the New
York Underground Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, and Mill Valley International Film Festival. Vekic won
a Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival for her short fi lm Lost & Found and is
the recipient of a San Francisco Individual Arts Commission Grant. She is currently producing STRAND: A
Natural History of Cinema, which was one of ten projects selected to participate in the Fast Track program
at the 2008 Los Angeles Film Festival and received the inaugural HBO Documentary Films Fellowship.
STRAND has received support from the California Council for the Humanities, The San Francisco Foundation
Bay Area Documentary Fund and the Herbert Family Grant. Vekic is currently writing and developing two
feature fi lm scripts, Solace and B-92. She is one of twelve fi nalists nominated for the initial $35,000 San
Francisco Film Festival/Kenneth Rainin Foundation Filmmaking Grant, to be given to a narrative feature fi lm
with a social justice theme being made in the
Bay Area.
