BIO
David Rodriguez Estrada was born in Texas, but grew up in the city of Durango, Mexico. At the age of
12, Rodriguez discovered a keen interest in writing and journalism while hosting a children’s radio show
for the national radio broadcaster Radiorama. At age 17, he moved to California and enrolled at the Art
Institute of CA, Los Angeles, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Digital Filmmaking
and accepted the Outstanding Achievement Award for both his narrative short fi lms.
His fi rst fi lm Suripanta, an Almodovaresque portrayal of the American dream, earned a nomination for an
Imagen Award in 2008 and was recently selected as part of the offi cial selection of Frameline 33, the
largest LGBT fi lm festival in the United States. It also won the Alberto Terrones Award for Best Short in
Durango, Mexico.
His thesis fi lm ¿Existes? had its world premiere at the Palm Springs International Shorts Fest in June of
2009. The fi lm explores the existentialist philosophies of six people in different parts of the world, connected
through the act of masturbation.
Rodriguez is currently working as an assistant to Mexican director Patricia Riggen, director of Under the
Same Moon. He is also developing his feature screenplay, Todos Santos, a road trip coming of age drama
about three young San Diego surfers and their unexpected encounter with a Mexican mula, a drug smuggler
in need of their help.
