Mackowiak and Hesketh researched many underwater treadmill options and had some key criteria in mind for their ideal system. “We wanted to make sure we had a system that was easy to clean, easy to get in and out of and made of resilient material. Another thing we looked closely at was the technology,” said Hesketh. The Neptune treadmill, with its stainless steel and glass water tank, dual entry for loading and unloading patients, Surface Pro 3 mountable control tablet and iPod touch or iPhone remote control option, was the perfect solution for Heartfelt.
Making space for rehabilitation Once Mackowiak and Hesketh made the decision to move forward with the Neptune treadmill, Geoffrey Amos, vice president of Tudor, worked closely with them to design the rehabilitation space.
“In most veterinary hospitals, space comes at a premium. For that reason, the Neptune treadmill is intentionally designed to have the smallest footprint possible,” said Amos. “Our treadmills have only three major components – the treadmill body, pump skid and water tank – so the system can be optimally positioned within a hospital.”
Aside from ensuring Heartfelt had adequate space to accommodate the treadmill, Mackowiak wanted to make sure there was space for clients to sit in the room and watch while their pets undergo
therapy. “We wanted to be able to talk to clients and explain what’s going on during the session. It gives them an opportunity to watch their pet’s progress each week and ask questions,” said Mackowiak.
Success through continued support Six months after implementing the Neptune, Mackowiak, Hesketh and staff couldn’t be happier with the new addition. Heartfelt has maintained a full water therapy schedule. “Right now, we get most of our referrals from the doctors working within Heartfelt, so we get a good amount of traffic from our existing customer base,” said Hesketh. “Community involvement is very important to us at Heartfelt, so we plan on working closely with other
veterinarians in the area to build out a broader referral network.”
Throughout the implementation process, Amos worked alongside Wendy Hennig, Patterson equipment specialist, and Patrick Hennessey, Patterson territory manager, to help get Heartfelt set up for success. “The information, support and resources provided by Tudor and Patterson complemented each other well throughout the process,” said Hesketh. “We’re so happy with the treadmill and how it allows us to give patients really individualized care. Whether it’s weight management, post-op recovery or arthritis rehabilitation, we’re helping prolong the healthy lifespans of our patients.”
