New Hospital, Old Roots

Parkersburg Veterinary Hospital has been in the Parkersburg, West Virginia, community for more than 50 years, serving three generations of clients and their pets. Many local and rural clients trust and look to Parkersburg Veterinary Hospital to be the premier provider of animal care in the area.

In 2005, J.D. Cunningham, DVM, and Todd Shockey, DVM, saw an opportunity to expand this well-established animal hospital. “The previous owner was looking to retire, so I became a 50 percent owner in 2005. It just so happened that Dr. Shockey started working for Parkersburg Veterinary Hospital at that same time and I really liked his approach to veterinary medicine and vision for the hospital,” said Cunningham.

Both Shockey and Cunningham had grown up on farms in rural areas of West Virginia and they shared a deeply engrained passion to care for animals. Put simply by Shockey, “It was like stars aligning.”

Later that year, Shockey became a partner in the business, purchasing a 10 percent share in the hospital. By 2010, Shockey had increased his share in the hospital to 50 percent and the two began planning for a new Parkersburg Veterinary Hospital.

Room to grow The doctors continued to run their hospital in its original building – an old house that had been renovated and added on to twice. Though this space had served them well for years, as the practice grew under new ownership it became clear that a change was needed. >>
