■ commentary Turning The Corner Good decisions point to progress for Choctaw Electric

February board of trustee’s meeting. This will be the first meeting of Choctaw Electric’s full nine-member board of trustees since the tumultuous events that led to the resignation of the previous board. I have always believed that when you find yourself going down the wrong road, the wise move is to make a turn and get started back in the right direction.

cHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER BY JOE HARRIS

It was their decision to conduct district meetings in Districts A, B, D and F, which allowed members to elect who they wanted to represent them on the board of trustees. They also lowered the per diem paid to trustees from $1,100 to the amount set in 1997 of $550. There have also been very conservative financial decisions made in the course of the meetings that exemplify the new direction being taken by this board.

It is apparent to me that Choctaw Electric Cooperative has turned a corner and is heading in a new direction that more closely aligns with the needs and wishes of its member-owners. I know the appointment of the first new trustees is bothersome to some of our members; however, their leadership and decisions since being appointed indicate that they hear what our members are saying and are responding in a positive way.

I wish to congratulate each of the new trustees for their willing to step up during this time to help Choctaw Electric navigate its way into the future.

The actions by your cooperative trustees along with numerous positive changes made in the daily management and operations of the cooperative are allowing us to make real progress down the right road.

There are many issues ahead of us that will need to be addressed, but I am pleased with the new direction of your cooperative. Let’s support the new board of trustees as we continue to move in the right direction.

■ How do I find out which Choctaw Electric district I live in?

Your Choctaw Electric voting district is printed on the right hand corner of your electric bill. A map of CEC voting districts is found on your co-op website —click on About Us and then Leadership, or see page 4 of the February issue of CEC Inside Your Co-op. A digital version is available online at www.choctawelectric. coop, or pick up a copy at any CEC office. The map is also found on CEC’s Facebook page.

CEC voting districts exist so that co-op members are equally represented on the co-op board. Ideally the boundaries of each district should contain roughly the same number of members. Some areas are more heavily populated than others, which can make it difficult to evenly slice the pie.

CEC bylaws state that the board of trustees should review district composition at least 60 days before any election meeting. If an inequality of more than five percent has developed that can be corrected by readjusting the districts, the board has the authority to do it so that each district contains as near as possible the same number of members.

The last adjustment of district boundaries took place in 2013. You will find details on CEC districts in your co-op bylaws, available online at www. choctawelectric.coop, or pick up a copy at any CEC office.
