bed top tent, their Tacoma is built to handle backcountry travel at mo- torcycle speeds. As adventure journalists, the Dragoos use their truck for many of their overland adventures, seeking out stories about historic sites, camping in remote wilderness areas, and as a base for hiking and exploring. “We confi gured our Tacoma to be the GS of trucks,” Bill Dragoo says, referring to BMW’s world-traveling “Gelande Strasse” or land- and street-capable enduro motorcycles. “As far as we are concerned, adven- ture begins where the pavement ends and we like a machine that doesn’t hold us back.”

For Woodward rancher and Northwestern Electric Cooperative mem-

ber Justin Howard, trucks are designed for work and travel. A former professional rodeo bronc rider, Howard has traveled all over the United States in pickup trucks. “When I buy a truck, I am looking for fuel economy, durability and longevity. I really like the Dodge Cummins diesel engine. I now use them in my cattle operations,” Howard says. As a rancher in wide-open western Oklahoma, you will regularly see

Howard pulling a stock trailer behind one of his Dodge trucks, hauling cows or horses to various pastures. Cimarron Electric Cooperative lineman Kurt Finlay uses his 2005

GMC Duramax diesel in a similar manner. “I use my truck for everything,” Finlay explains. “I farm out of it, haul feed to cattle, hunt from it, you name it. It is a great all-around, do-ev- erything vehicle.” For many in rural Oklahoma, a pickup truck was their fi rst vehicle. “My fi rst vehicle was a 1973 Ford Bronco and later a 1981 Ford pickup that I still own to this day,” Howard says. “I plan to restore my Ford truck soon.” For Shaw in Talihina, a 1978 Chevy Stepside truck was his fi rst

vehicle.

“It had a 250 in-line six, three on the tree [gear shift] and ran on pro- pane. I could drive with my foot on the fl oor and never get a speeding ticket. It was an ugly, calf-scour yellow but its claim to fame was hauling the 1982 Eastern Oklahoma State College Homecoming Queen and eight of her cutest friends around campus,” Shaw says. Henry Ford most likely never envisioned all the varied uses his humble

Model T would be tasked with once he added a cargo box and tailgate. Then again, if he were able to see how Oklahomans have put his inven- tion to use, he probably wouldn’t be surprised. In Oklahoma, pickup trucks make sense for a lot of people. They fi t together much like moms and apple pies.
