Kiamichi Electric Cooperative, Wilburton

Kiamichi Electric has offered Exede to its members since 2006, and around 350 currently subscribe. Member Services Director Todd Minshall said Exede customers are happy with its performance. “Satellite is the only thing that will reach many of our folks right now,”

he said. “Our Exede customers are residential and live in some of the most remote locations of our service area.” In addition to the standard $49.99 monthly fee and basic installation costs, Kiamichi Electric collaborates with the NRTC to offer unlimited email and web browsing packages. Also available are “free zones” that allow customers to use the web at no charge from midnight to 5 a.m. “Electric co-ops originally provided a service because no one else did,”

Minshall said. “We’re focused on following the rural co-op mission of doing everything we can to support our members.” One of Kiamichi Electric’s biggest advantages, said Minshall, is the fact

that the NRTC handles much of Exede’s technical support. The arrangement is convenient for many of Oklahoma’s participating rural co-ops, eliminat- ing the need for additional staff and funding. Still, Kiamichi has found a way to maintain a local connection. “We’ve had many of the same installers since we started offering Exede,”

Minshall said. “They do a great job. We put people out there who refl ect our name well because we’re going to protect our membership.”
