ICE, WIND (Continued from pg. 5) We need to work on ways to report outages on line or through text in simple, better ways.
Sunrise at the Watonga Yard.
So How Bad Was It? The preliminary numbers look like the poles, cross arms and broke lines are in the 5.5 million dollar neighborhood. That does not include trucks, labor and other cost. We replaced 1046 poles and almost 1500 cross arms. Thousands of wire splices and wire ties were used.
WFEC’s 6 miles of transmission lines broken down feeding Watonga sub.
Our electricity supplier, WFEC, lost several large structures throughout our system, but the 6 miles of H struc- tures to the Watonga substation was the worse and most critical. Those 6 miles had to be rebuilt in order to get the sub energized. It was the last line to come hot, and we restored power to the last 1500 customers within min- utes when it was energized. (see map)
A country mile of men & trucks S.W. of Loyal rebuilding the lines.
During an ice storm, we start be- fore daybreak and work a few hours after sundown on the lines. Safety is compromised when workers get too tired. Some work into the night, plan- ning for the next day. Many worked all night on the last night before all were restored. We want to thank you, our members, for your patience and encouragement as we worked through this terrible ice storm
New iron pole installed as 1st double circuit pole out of Calumet substation.
Red -1500 without power @ 12:13 PM 1500 with power in blue @ 12:22 PM when Watonga sub was energized!
We also want to thank the following Co-ops for sending crews: North- western for sending 2 crews, one 5 man crew from Ozarks, one 5 man crew from Pioneer, one 3 man crew fromSedgwick County, one 4 man crew from Lande-Scott, 5 crews from Missouri, one 7 man crew from Cimar- ron, a 5 man crew and a 7 man crew from First Electric Cooperative, a 6 man crew from North Arkansas E.C. and a 6 man crew from Craighead Electric Co-op. We thank you for help- ing us in our time of need. You are all good neighbors!
The snapshots were taken on I-pads 9 minutes apart. We love the blue!
Wind & Ice... a powerful combination. 120 of the 85’ poles were snapped! Below: Big equipment required.
Loading wire in the Kgf. Yard. Below:A trafic jam of trucks loading up and men getting instructions on what to load and where they are going!
