Alexa, tell me more about the future...
Editor and publisher, Nick Marlow, is optimistic about the year and decade ahead. What opportunities are there out there?
T
here appears to be a lot of optimism around at the moment.
I don’t know if it’s because of the election, or because just because it’s the start of a new decade, but it appears a lot of the doom and gloom has lifted. Have you noticed it yourself?
There appears to be a bit more of a ‘can do’ attitude. Maybe these really will be the roaring 20s! We’re rapidly approaching show season – which will be the acid test to how this year at least, will shape up. The SHOT Show will have been and gone, The British Shooting Show is just weeks away, and of course, there’s IWA to follow. On the fi shing side of things, we’ve got Leeda’s iceTackle, then we’re straight into consumer shows with the Northern Angling Show, Big One Stoneleigh (and that’s really starting to take shape now) and of course the massive Farnborough event. Obviously we all hope that these shows will be a big hit – and speaking to a lot of dealers, there appears to be a lot of positivity out
there – so fi ngers crossed we can really get off to a fl ying start this year. So are there any negatives looming – things that we need to worry about in the next decade? Well without a crystal ball, that’s

going to be a bit hard to predict – but climate change is the biggest worry. Not least because of the increasing amount of pressure being levied on drivers… and let’s face it – all of our customers drive. But thinking positively, I’m
sure there will be solutions! Back in 2010 few would have
predicted Facebook would become the beast it has. Instagram didn’t
exist. And Twitter was going to go bust. Whatsapp was one year old and nobody had ever heard of it. So will there be any new mediums headed our way this decade? My bets are on audio. And before you mock, with the rise of Siri and Alexa, why wouldn’t there be? Audio is largely overlooked by both the shooting and fi shing trades, but why? We all drive on long journeys for our respective sports. You can’t watch a video when you’re driving. You can’t read when you’re driving your new non-polluting vehicle. But you can listen. Research recently published has shown that investing in audio branding delivers signifi cant marketing returns – and as we know, early adopters usually come out on top.
