Dealers cautiously optimistic in 2020
The High Street maybe dying, but research shows leisure spending is flying. So have we got a good year to look forward to? The signs are good...
A
retail lobby group says 2019 proved to be the worst year on record for sales amid growing evidence Christmas failed to deliver late cheer for the High Street. And the British Retail Consortium (BRC)/KPMG Retail Sales Monitor showed a 0.1% decline in total sales last year compared with growth of 1.2% in a tough climate in 2018. But is it doom and gloom out there?

“We’ve ended 2019 having the best year we’ve ever had,” says Anthony Johnson, owner of Johnson Ross. And Anthony is not alone, with many dealers in both the shooting and fi shing trade quietly reporting that 2019 wasn’t actually that bad. Now new data from Barclaycard
has revealed that we could be a lot more upbeat, suggesting consumers
prioritised trips out with family and friends rather than shopping. Anthony continued: “We’ve certainly noticed a big difference with our customers. People seem happier, more settled. You could see it all year but we certainly have picked up on it since the election. Maybe there is a Boris Bounce, who knows? I think 2020 will be a good year too.”
