“
We’ve come a long way in 12 months,” says Ian Smith, sales and marketing manager for Shimano. “We started last year with a UK
trade road show, to present our new terms, but it wasn’t easy to get dealers to attend. Our product has never been an issue, but the brands previous approach to the market meant that we were not allowing all our customers to benefi t from selling Shimano goods.”

Ian Smith, Shimano’s sales and marketing manager, is very pleased with how dealer attitude has changed towards the brand.
In the course of 12 months, how things have changed for Shimano – which saw sales slowly and steadily build throughout the year as dealers realised the company was battling hard to level things out. Ian continues: “We listened and adjusted our terms at the end of 2018 and have done the same again for 2020. We are delighted in the positive reaction from our customers, many of whom had previously dropped the brand.

“The new commercial policy is easy to understand,” explains Ian, “terms are clear and the structure is simple.” T&G has spoken to a number of dealers and they have all spoken very positively about Shimano.
Shimano as a
company has massively improved. Their relationship with the dealer is better. Stock availability has improved and they have done what they said they’d do
“We didn’t deal with Shimano for a while,” says Kevin Peet, owner of The
Tackle Box, Dartford. He continued: “They’ve acknowledged the problems they’ve had previous and really have worked hard to level the playing fi eld. We’ve come back on board and we’re happy with how things are working. It seems to be OK and they are certainly moving in the right direction. How long these things last is anyone’s guess, but for now, all is good.” Meanwhile up the road in
Hertfordshire, Anthony Johnson of Johnson Ross told us: “Shimano as a company has massively improved. Their relationship with the dealer is better. Stock availability has improved and they have done what they said they’d do – they have fairer terms and really have leveled the playing fi eld. They’re now a very easy company to deal with and long may that continue!”
