MARKET REPORT SITE WELFARE

The Big Space 24 is the company’s first twin-axle model..

Decisive Boss

Alan Guthrie visits Boss Cabins, which is developing a growing range of site welfare products for the hire market at its Lincolnshire factory.

Reflecting the ever-increasing awareness amongst site managers of the need to provide appropriate Health & Safety facilities for personnel, Boss Cabins has grown steadily since its foundation five years ago. The business was established in the aftermath of the administration of Wordsworth Holdings, a group of manufacturing companies that, between them, made products ranging from doors to agricultural implements, and which also included Barford Site Dumpers.

The economic downturn meant that some operations became unviable, but others were seen as more promising, including Boss Space which built site welfare units. It was renamed Boss Cabins, part of a streamlined group called BCS, which also includes Hertfordshire-based dealer Boss Plant Sales and new lighting tower manufacturer, Heimdall (UK), on which we reported in our October issue.

The Comfort Space 7 can accommodate up to seven people.

“We could see potential for a new range of mobile welfare units,” said

Graham Stansfield, MD of Boss Cabins and Boss Plant Sales. “These products were ideal for plant and equipment hirers to offer, and we already had good contacts through the former Barford business. The units give long-term hire opportunities, are easy to maintain and have a footprint no larger than a 6 tonne dumper.”

Originally based in Grantham, the operation re-located in January 2014 to the 66,000ft2

factory in Bourne that provides design and

manufacturing facilities for BCS companies, and where significant investment has been made in laser cutters, CNC routers, shot-blasting equipment and a dedicated paint spraying facility.

The Boss Cabins range has expanded steadily since the initial introduction of a six-man unit, the Comfort Space. Models now include the Big Space accommodating 10 to 15 people, with versions incorporating both welfare and office areas, as well as 16ft, 20ft and 24ft long versions, the latter being the company’s first twin- axle model and designed to offer the maximum accommodation area in a road-towable unit meeting the latest VCA Type Approval

regulations. Last year, the Comfort Space 7 was introduced, offering facilities for up to seven people. Also available are the Tool Space 12 and 16 for secure storage, and the Office Space 12 and 16 anti-vandal units. Additionally, Eco+ variants are offered with 12V LED lighting and 12V power outlets, as well Hybrid models with an integrated inverter, diesel air heaters and automated battery charging.

At the Showman’s Show in October, Boss Cabins displayed a prototype welfare unit to invite customer feedback. Its chief characteristic was the inclusion of a flushing toilet which uses only 0.5 litres of water at a time, making it particularly efficient and environmentally-friendly in terms of its use of resources. The model on display had separate 80-litre storage tanks for clean and waste water, and the 14ft-long cabin can accommodate nine people, with a larger than average desk area in the main cabin. It also has the usual facilities for eating, washing, heating and lighting. The company believes that the product could be popular for use as a site office by construction managers and event organisers.

Stainless steel construction is available as an option on all products, carrying a 25-year anti-corrosion warranty. Boss Shadow telemetry can also be fitted, enabling remote monitoring and GPS tracking of the units. Graham Stansfield says that, in many instances, breakdowns can be resolved quickly over the telephone, as most result from operator error, and this avoids the hirer having to send out a field engineer.

The Bourne factory also makes the

RedBox power generator, which was designed to meet Boss Cabins’ specific requirements for a compact machine to include in its welfare units.

The Tool Space is designed for secure on-site storage.
