EXECUTIVE REPORT
Atlas Copco generators on show included the QEP3, QEP6 and QES20.
Generating interest
Nick Johnson reports on the latest equipment displayed by Atlas Copco at its recent Construction Live! event.
Towards the end of September, Atlas Copco staged Construction Live! at the Hertfordshire Showground, conveniently close to its Hemel Hempstead headquarters. The two-day outdoor event included products not only from the manufacturer itself, but also from some of its customers and suppliers.
Machinery from Atlas Copco included

compactors, hand-held and machine- mounted breakers and demolition
equipment, compressors, generators, pumps, lighting towers, concrete equipment and road construction machinery. Amongst other exhibits were Kubota and Thwaites machines from dealer, Shellplant, and generators from the hire fleet of Generator Power.
Good interest was shown in the Atlas Copco Dynapac CS1400 deadweight roller. This centre-pivoted three drum roller could now come into its own in the UK, as the German roller maker, Hamm, has stopped making its HW90 machine. The CS1400 can weigh up to 13.2 tonnes when fully ballasted and it provides a roll width of 2.1m. Like the HW90, it can also be fitted with an edge cutter.
At the smaller end of its compaction equipment range was the new LF60 forward travel vibratory plate. Incorporating a handle designed for low HAV, it weighs 58kg (with water tank) and has a plate width of 350mm. It utilises a 2.2kW Honda GX100 petrol engine and a Kevlar cord V-belt. The machine generates a centrifugal force of 10kN with an amplitude of 0.9mm and a frequency of 95Hz. The quoted maximum vibration figure is 1.9m/s2
and the plate is
factory-prepared to take a block paving kit. The Asphalt version of the LF60 has a detachable plastic water tank that distributes water to the ground without the need for a spray bar. The machine is also available with fold-down transport wheels.
Also on show was one of Atlas Copco’s latest vibratory rammers, the LT5005. With a slim design for operation in narrow trenches, it weighs 61kg and has a plate width of 150mm. Fitted with a 2.6kW

Honda GXR120 4-stroke engine, it has an amplitude of 54mm and a frequency of 12Hz. The rammer has an engine oil level gauge, an hour meter and a filter indicator. An optional trolley is available.
Atlas Copco has also updated its Cobra petrol-driven breaker. The latest PROe version weighs less at 24kg and is easier to start. With impact energy of 60 Joules, this hand-held, self-contained breaker is claimed to transmit up to 10% less vibration than the earlier model.
Several smaller Atlas Copco generators were unveiled, including the QEP3, QEP6 and QES20 with outputs of 2.9kVA, 5.9kVA and 20.0kVA respectively. The cradle-mounted QEP3 has a Honda GX160 petrol engine with recoil start. It weighs 41kg and has an 11-litre fuel tank. The trolley-mounted QEP6 weighs 94kg and has a Yanmar L70N diesel engine. The skid-mounted QES20 has a Kubota diesel engine and a MeccAlte alternator. It has a super-silent canopy, forklift slots, a lifting eye and a Qc1011 controller for engine monitoring and protection. Other models include the QES9, QES14, QES30 and QES40.
Three of Atlas Copco’s latest dry prime water pumps were on display, namely the skid-mounted PAS4, PAS6 and PAS8. These 4in, 6in and 8in centrifugal models have Kubota diesel engines and incorporate galvanised steel enclosures for quiet operation. The company also showed lighting towers, including the mobile QLT H500 and the skid-mounted QLB60. Both have multi-section vertical masts with a choice of metal halide or LED lamps.

Atlas Copco generators, including a QAS60 housed, along with a fuel tank, inside a Powersafe secure, bunded structure. The Wakefield-based company now has a fleet of approximately 1,300 generators, the vast majority being Atlas Copco models, and it has recently bought bigger premises for its Reading depot.
