People’s experience outside the home is also helping to promote the desirability and expectation of being comfortable in hot weather. T he majority of offices, restaurants, shops and family cars are now air conditioned, so it is an unpleasant end to a day to drive home from your air conditioned office, in your air conditioned car to your hot home, for a sticky night’s sleep in a room where you are reluctant to open the windows, even if the ambient temperature and humidity are low enough to be comfortable. The now near-universal holiday abroad has also shown us that there is an other way.


The pressure to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels is growing, but heating by directly burning gas and other fossil fuels is never going to achieve this. Using air conditioning with heat p umps, with a typical modern COP of 3.5 or more, running costs would be on a par with a gas heating system, even if gas is a third of the price and, crucially, the greening of the grid will reduce the nett carbon footprint compared to traditional fossil-fuel based heating.

b ecome much more compelling. There can also be a saving on capital and installation costs in n ew-build situations and major refurbishments, a nd homeowners can take advantage of the Renewable Heat Incentive.

H owever, many house owners have experienced t he convenience of getting heating and cooling f rom a small single split to maintain the right temperature in their conservatories and the luxury feel of underfl oor heating from heat pumps has become the latest must-have at the top end of the market.
