SUPERMARKET SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT

First Choice keen on green

F

irst Choice Group refrigeration spares manager, Steve James, champions one of the most sought after energy efficient products on the market.

“With regard to efficiency, there’s an ever increasing interest in green technologies and natural refrigerants. This makes CO2

Safety devices from Henry

refrigerant. The company’ is renowned for developing high- efficiency expansion valves which reduce impact on the environment while increasing energy savings.

for larger commercial refrigeration. “Carel offers complete solutions to optimise refrigerant applications which use CO2

verpressure protection is one of the most important areas of refrigeration system design. This particularly applies to supermarket systems which, due to their nature, are installed in relatively close proximity to a large number of people. The final line of defence against dangerous overpressure is the pressure relief valve. PRVs are designed to limit the overpressure in a system to a maximum of 10% beyond their user-determined set point and should be selected based on their discharge capacity. In Europe, the most commonly used and accepted way of sizing a PRV is the calculation contained in EN13136, which takes into account external fire, internal heat sources and compressor discharge rate.

The valves themselves can vary significantly in performance with the very best models carrying certification to the EN ISO 4126-1 standard. These models are tested for repeatability and are designed to close again within 15% of the set pressure following a discharge – a major advantage over valves not carrying this certification which can drop the system pressure by 50-60% when venting, with the resulting refrigerant charge loss that incurs.

“The Carel E2V electronic expansion valves for low capacity applications combines high reliability and precise control. Expansion valves are mainly used in commercial refrigeration to supply the evaporators on showcases and in cold rooms. The task of the expansion device is to guarantee correct superheat at the evaporator outlet. Better control precision boosts energy saving, safety and stability of the entire refrigerant circuit.

“First Choice Group is one of the approved stockists in the UK of the Carel range of refrigeration equipment controls. We offer a wide range of electronic controllers and control components – including the Carel E2V – for both the commercial catering and retail markets. Our refrigeration team has also undertaken product training at Carel’s London offices in order to provide First Choice Group customers with a comprehensive service and unsurpassed technical support.”

Cabinets from Pastorfrigor

PRVs can be complimented by rupture discs (non-reclosing relief devices which are fitted upstream of a PRV and ensure a hermetic seal prior to a discharge) and three-way dual shut-off valves (which allow changeover of a PRV whilst maintaining system protection at all times).

W

here are many pressures on retail supermarkets to ensure they not only have energy efficient refrigeration cabinets but that the cabinets also acts as a sales tool for their chilled and frozen products.

Pastorfrigor works with its customers to meet the store brief. It knows from experience that chilled produce, snacks and drinks sell better from open multi- decks such as the Venezia, whereas meat and dairy is perfect behind energy saving doors of the Venezia Panorama. Frozen food is another area where retailers have the dilemma of what’s best for the store. Island cabinets like the Sardegna are great for displaying bagged and boxed products.

Full glass door cabinets, however, have a smaller footprint but are not as good at merchandising small bagged products. As a result, Pastorfrigor has developed special shelving and wire displays in the standard Torino model to enable retailers to display all types of product behind a LED lit glass door. Pastorfrigor also has a range of impulse display cabinets. The PanareaNG is a mobile table display and the Felix is a dual temperature island. Whatever is required Pastorfrigor GB has the answer. We have fantastic technical and retailer knowledge which makes us the obvious choice for refrigerated display equipment.

Dough retarder from Williams

illiams Refrigeration’s dough retarder provers are popular in supermarkets for chilling and proving the dough for in-

store bakeries’ bread and pastries.

The latest retarder provers from Williams use sophisticated controllers and advanced refrigeration to ensure that almost any type of bread and baked products come out perfectly, time after time. These advancements also mean production runs are more flexible, faster and cost less, while allowing operators to plan for potential bottlenecks. The retarder provers feature Williams’ DoughMaster controller, which offers a more simplistic and user-friendly approach to baking.

A key feature of the DoughMaster controller is its Economy Mode. Most regular bakery controllers will flood the chamber with forced steam, much of which is wasted energy. The DoughMaster controller not only regulates steam generation but also calculates and supplies the exact amount required, dramatically reducing energy consumption.

The DoughMaster features touchscreen technology and intuitive on-screen instructions and graphics, which make it very easy to operate. It can also provide feedback and diagnostics, reducing downtime.

The retarder provers accommodate 18’ x 30’ trays and are available in cabinet, counter and modular formats.

Williams Refrigeration offers a comprehensive range of commercial refrigeration including gastronorm cabinets and counters, specialist bakery equipment, coldrooms, merchandisers and blast chillers.
