SUPERMARKET SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT Helping
industry achieve 2022 F-Gas compliance
With legislation-driven GWPs tumbling over the next few years, Honeywell details its commercial and industrial off ering.
B
y 2022, the European Union’s F-gas regulations will ban the use of refrigerants with a global-warming-potential (GWP) greater than 150 in hermetically sealed applications.
One of the sectors that will be most impacted by this new limit will be OEMs supplying retail stores and supermarkets with standalone, small charge plug-in cabinets, refrigeration condensing units and monoblock systems for cold rooms and freezer rooms.
The challenge for refrigerant manufacturers, such as Honeywell, has been to create solutions that not only meet the established value of <150 GWP but that can also deliver the required effi ciency, capacity, temperature and pressure ratio performance through near ‘drop-in’ capability. Honeywell’s new R455A refrigerant – a blend of R1234yf, R32 and CO2
and marketed as Solstice
L40X – has been developed to help the commercial and industrial refrigeration sector meet its F-Gas obligations up to and beyond 2022, notably as a replacement for high GWP, low temperature refrigerants such as R404A.
“The EU’s F-gas regulations set strict quotas on the total GWP of product that can be placed on the market,” said Julien Soulet, managing director for
40 March 2017
Honeywell Fluorine Products in Europe, Middle East, Africa and India.
“R455A is available now and meets the demands of these regulations, while providing similar or even better performance compared to solutions that are being phased out. As companies evaluate the range of options that are available for medium- and low-temperature standalone applications, we expect that R455A will be an ideal solution that helps them meet environmental targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
The intent of the EU F-gas regulation is to cut the total GWP of products placed on the market through quota reductions as well as bans on the use of >150 GWP in new build ‘plug-in’ type hermetically sealed refrigeration cabinets. Although the ban comes into force in 2022, Honeywell research suggests that the transition to new generation low GWP refrigerants for MT (medium temperature and LT (low temperature) applications needs to take place from 2018 for industry to be ready for the switch.
With a GWP of 146 (96% lower than R404A), R455A meets the strict demands of the F-Gas regulation, and is therefore not subject to availability restrictions, nor to HFC-related taxes, while its low carbon performance means it can be
