Student/New Periodontist Series

New speaker(s) will be participating in the session

New for 2017 Schedule of Events Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017

CE1: Technological Advances in Our Practices: The Future is Now 2:30–5 p.m. Program Track: Imaging and Emerging Technologies Moderator: E. Todd Scheyer

Speakers: William Giannobile, Irena Sailer, and Markus Schlee

Novel technologies for periodontal bioengineering and digital dynamic diagnosis and treatment planning.

The reconstruction of alveolar bone defects caused by development abnormalities, trauma, or disease is a major goal of oral reconstructive therapy. The field of tissue engineering combines advances in materials science and biology to repair tissues and organs. Over the past decade, investigators have utilized growth factor biologics, barriers, and bone replacement grafts to restore lost tooth support due to damage of the alveolus. This presentation will highlight emerging technologies in digital treatment planning, 3D bioprinting, biomaterials, and growth factor biologics for application to the clinical area. Specific attention will be given to the long-term use of Allogenec bone blocks and current use of patient specific bone blocks milled pre- surgically with a CAD/CAM approach. The age of complete digital smile diagnostics and design is becoming reality. These new technologies will be presented to elaborate on the opportunities that exist for the clinician and patient.

Educational Objectives

• Identify the principles involved in tissue engineering of tooth-and implant-supporting periodontal structures such as bone, periodontal ligament, gingival, and cementum.

• Determine the potential of new and emerging therapies such as CAD/CAM allografts, stem cells, 3D printing technology, and interactive scaffold matrices.

• Recognize both patient-specific and implant-specific factors affecting treatment outcomes of regenerative therapies.

• Learn about the current possibilities and limitations of technology for digital smile diagnostics.

CE2: Treatment of Peri-Implant Diseases 2:30–5 p.m. Program Track: Implants Moderator: Hom-Lay Wang

Speakers: Stuart J. Froum and Stefan Renvert

The session will focus on how to diagnose and treat peri- implant diseases and suggests how the initial treatment planning can be done. Different non-surgical and surgical treatment options will be discussed and demonstrated. Implant explantment techniques will also be addressed.

Educational Objectives: • Learn how to clinically diagnose peri-implant diseases.

• Anticipate expected results following non-surgical therapy and surgical therapy of peri-implant mucositis and peri- implantitis.

• Review techniques used in managing peri-implant diseases, including non-surgical treatment, surgical treatment (either osseous or regenerative), and implant removal.

CE3: Managing Esthetic Failures on Anterior Dental Implants: Etiologies and Treatment Solutions

2:30–5 p.m. Program Track: Interdisciplinary Therapy Moderator: Donald S. Clem, III

Speakers: Stephen Chu, Mark Hochman, and Dennis Tarnow

Esthetic failures associated with dental implants in the esthetic zone can be one of the greatest challenges facing the dental team. These dilemmas can present themselves as either midfacial, interdental, or combination defect types. A significant part of treatment therapy revolves around correction of these esthetic defects due to either poor treatment planning, implant placement, and restorative contours. Surgical, orthodontic, and restorative treatment planning options and techniques to address these esthetic deficiencies will be presented in a sequential manner from simple periodontal- restorative solutions to more complex case types.

Educational Objectives:

• Assess the potential of hard and soft tissue correction around aesthetically challenged anterior implants.

• Learn when adjunctive orthodontic therapy should be employed.

• Know when a prosthetic restorative solution is the best treatment plan option.
