Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017 HW4: Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Therapy with Piezocision™ (Hands-On Workshop)

8 a.m.–5 p.m. Program Track: Interdisciplinary Therapy Speakers: Serge Dibart and Donald B. Nelson Cost: $950; limited attendance; lunch included.

Besides treatment length, one of the challenges facing orthodontists today is the ability to move teeth in areas with little gingiva or bone. The possibility of creating or aggravating an existing mucogingival defect is always present when dealing with a thin biotype. Over the years, several surgical techniques have been developed to address such issues and reduce overall treatment time. Piezocision™ is a minimally invasive procedure combining micro-incisions and localized piezoelectric surgery to achieve similar results rapidly, with minimal trauma and discomfort. It is very well accepted by the patients, and can be used with conventional orthodontics or clear aligners. Another advantage is the possibility of integrating short orthodontics, via Piezocision,™ in multidisciplinary treatments to correct tooth position and create spaces that will facilitate and optimize prosthetic and esthetic outcomes while allowing for minimally invasive dentistry.

Educational Objectives: • Grasp the biological basis and indications of Piezocision.™ • Use Piezocision™ to expand the scope of your practice.

• Adopt the surgical technique by practicing on an animal model.

HW5: Paradigm Shifts in Maxillary Sinus Elevation (Hands-On Workshop)

8 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Program Track: Regeneration/Tissue Engineering

Speakers: Scott Froum, Salah A. Huwais, DDS, Ziv Mazor, and Stephen S. Wallace

Cost: $1,350; limited attendance; lunch included.

Maxillary sinus elevation procedures have evolved greatly in the 40 years since the technique was first presented as a means to create additional bone volume in the posterior maxilla. At first, this evolution was directed towards increasing procedural success and higher implants survival rates. These goals have been accomplished and now evolution is directed towards minimally invasive procedures that allow for the same success rates along with shorter treatment times.

The speakers are three individuals who have pioneered both research and clinical innovation in this field for over 25 years. Also speaking as a guest presenter on osseodensification will be its founder, Dr. Salah Huwais. The goal of the course will be to present the most current scientific evidence and clinical practice advances so as to make you comfortable in your choice of therapeutic approach.

The course format will be that of sequential presentations followed by hands-on sessions on each of the highlighted techniques. Included will be; piezoelectric surgery, the DASK technique, L-PRF, and osseodensification. Throughout the presentations newer graft materials will be introduced.

Members are talking…

“The AAP can help me build my practice, stay on top of rapidly changing science, and make friends I will have for a lifetime.”

– Li Song, AAP Member 38 | American Academy of Periodontology 103rd Annual Meeting

A highlight of the course will be Dr. Mazor’s presentation on “thinking outside of the box” which will present solutions that deal with unusual and difficult cases. Sinus anatomy will be presented from the perspective of the surgeon. Complication avoidance and treatment will be presented culminating in an algorithm for the handling of postoperative sinus infections and sinusitis.

Attendees can email additional topics they wish to hear discussed prior to the course to Dr. Wallace at sswdds.sinus@sbcglobal.net.

Educational Objectives:

• Gain familiarity with clinically important aspects of sinus anatomy.

• Identify how to both avoid and treat complications.

• Obtain hands-on experience with the most current lateral and crestal techniques.

• Discuss choosing the appropriate technique for a particular case, including osseodensification.
