Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017 EV2: AAP/AAP Foundation/Osteology Foundation Symposium: Hard and Soft Tissue Regeneration for Teeth and Implants

Presented by the Osteology Foundation, the American Academy of Periodontology, and the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation.

8 a.m.–noon Program Track: Regeneration/Tissue Engineering Moderators: Pamela K. McClain and Mariano Sanz

Speakers: Daniel Buser, Sonia Leziy, Marc Nevins, and Mariano Sanz

Cost: Complimentary with full attendee registration; limited attendance.

This session will explore the current concepts and alternatives on hard and soft tissue regeneration both around teeth and dental implants. Speakers will provide the clinical guidelines associated with current concepts and alternatives in soft and hard tissue regeneration. In addition, this session will also include discussion of using soft tissue substitutes and xenogeneic scaffolds to improve the outcomes of the different interventions and to diminish patient morbidity.

Educational Objectives:

• Assess the current concepts in soft tissue regeneration around teeth and dental implants.

• Identify techniques that improve periodontal regeneration.

• Explore the use of scaffolds and barrier membranes to improve regenerative outcomes associated with implant therapy.

• Review the clinical guidelines associated with hard and soft tissue regeneration around teeth and implants.

*Note: A limited number of third-year periodontal residents are eligible to receive an educational grant to cover their attendance at the AAP Annual Meeting, including participation in the Symposium. To qualify, residents are required to submit a letter of confirmation from their post doctoral program directors verifying their status as third- year residents as of Sept. 9, 2017 with their registration form. The Symposium is also open to other registrants who wish to participate as part of full-meeting registration. Seating is limited.

This session is supported by educational grants from the AAP Foundation and the Osteology Foundation.

EV1: Dental Hygiene Symposium 8 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Moderator: Wai S. Cheung

Speakers: I. Stephen Brown, Bruce Edelstein, Purnima Kumar, and Thomas G. Wilson, Jr.

Cost: $99; limited attendance.

Dental hygienists are a crucial part of the periodontal team and play an essential role in providing quality periodontal care to patients. The interactive Dental Hygiene Symposium is designed to elevate the registered dental hygienist as a key partner in comprehensive oral health care. Attendees can earn four CE credits through a series of four lectures discussing periodontal- systemic link, endoscopic periodontal debridement, the future of lasers in periodontal therapy, and implant maintenance.

The Dental Hygiene Symposium is a ticketed event, but Annual Meeting registration is not required. This event is separate from the Annual Meeting’s one-day pass for hygienists and lunch is not included.

For additional symposium details, see pages 37 and 59. Thanks to Hu-Friedy for sponsoring this Symposium.

Periodontal-Systemic Link Purnima Kumar

Over half of American adults suffer from moderate to severe periodontitis, yet the risk for disease is not equal among all members of the population. Several environmental, genetic, genotypic, and lifestyle-related factors affect the risk for disease, and when some of these factors intersect, the whole is greater than the sum of each factor alone. This presentation will discuss the various factors that contribute to increased susceptibility for disease, and the role of the dental practitioner in mitigating or ameliorating these risks.

Educational Objectives:

• Recognize the interconnection between the periodontium and the rest of the body.

• Discuss the roles of genetic, genotypic, and environmental factors in increasing susceptibility to periodontal and peri- implant diseases.

• Explore the role of the periodontist-hygienist team in treating such patients, and in mitigating the effects of these risk factors.
