SQUASH Winter


WINTER SQUASH CULTURE


After danger of frost, when soil is 55-60°F, sow in rows 6-8 feet apart, 3 seeds per foot, thinning to 1 plant, or plant in hills 6 seeds per hill, thinning to 3 plants per hill 6-8' apart each way. Seeds will not germi- nate in cool soil. Plant seeds 1" deep. Allow 9-12 days for germination. When harvesting, leave stems on the squash. For best storage do not wash and do not bruise. Well-rotted manure mixed into the bottom of each hill will help increase yields. Packets contain 30 seeds unless otherwise stated.

95 Day. Buttercup. Semi-bush type buttercup that produces 3-4 dark green fruits that weigh between 2½ and 3 lbs. Tis squash has a deep orange flesh that is sweet and fine textured and makes for good eating or stores well for later use.

Bonbon Bush Delicata


80 Day. Butternut. A new butternut variety that has good squash color and uni- formity. Te plant has a semi-bush habit that makes it good for smaller gardens. It has Powdery Mildew tolerance and good crack resistance.

Delicata Early Butternut Sun Spot


81 Day. Buttercup. 2005 AAS Winner. Sweet-as-candy flavor and space-saving vines. Tick, orange flesh has rich, creamy texture when cooked. Dark green, 4 lb. fruits have gray button ends and silver stripes. Ripens a week earlier than similar varieties. Upright, semi-bush 8' vines display wide adaptability and good disease resistance.

Te fruits of this sweet potato squash are very similar to the one listed below except the vines only grow to 3' long, therefore it is more adapted to smaller gardens. Sweet Dumpling Sweet Mama


100 Day. Delicata. If you think you don’t like winter squash, give this one a try. Compact, oblong, 6-8" fruits have cream-colored skin with dark-green stripes and fine-grained orange flesh with incredibly sweet flavor much like a sweet pota- to. Excellent for stuffing and baking, even right after harvest.

70 Day. Acorn. Early, top quality and good keeping. Medium-small, 2½ lb. fruits with black-green skin. Sweet, golden flesh is nutty, almost fiber free with excep- tional quality. Vigorous, semi-bush plants are suitable for kitchen gardens. Yields 5-7 squash per plant.
